nathanallan #2 Posted June 28, 2011 That's neat, but it looks like $20 going by the printing on the packaging shown. Neat stuff.
Karyyk #3 Posted June 28, 2011 At that price point, I'd buy a few. Hopefully this is for real, and hopefully, they'll get some indie game support. I'd love to see a portable version of VVVVVV or Desktop Dungeons on this thing.
OldSchoolRetroGamer #4 Posted June 28, 2011 Interesting concept, hope it makes it to the starting gate but reminds me of a couple other past concepts that ended up being Vaporware: http://www.consoledatabase.com/consoleinfo/indremaentertainmentsystem/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom_%28game_system%

Cebus Capucinis #6 Posted June 28, 2011 That's exactly what I was thinking. The FAQ states that "once production ramps up it will be in retail stores".....something tells me it won't even reach that point. 200-500 units sold total, maybe? Sucks, too, because it's a great idea but without big marketing, it won't go anywhere. Hoping I'm wrong on it though!
Austin #7 Posted June 28, 2011 This sounds pretty cool. I'm curious to hear how it pans out in the end.

+GroovyBee #14 Posted June 28, 2011 Given that you can't see any development systems on the site (or I couldn't find them at least) and you are just told to go and use SDL at 320x240 to make "your game" on a PC/Mac whatever I'm pretty sure that its not going to hit the $10-$20 price point if it actually comes out. One of the games in their "showcase" uses GameMaker for that super professional look .
kroogur #15 Posted June 28, 2011 From their faq: "How much will the nD cost? The current target price for the nD is $10-20. It is being sold at cost with no markup. "It costs ten dollars because that's what they cost to make." If this system is as open as they say it will be how exactly are they going to turn a profit and stay in business? I can't see game sales sustaining this.

I can't see game sales sustaining this. Yeah, I'm not really seeing a solid "Here's where we make our money" angle. The system is sold at/near cost and the games can be free? That has a very dot-com-era mantra to it: The faster you lose money, the richer you get. :-p Also, the FAQ has a lot of very indefinate language in it, such as "Once production ramps up" and so on. It leads me to think that this crew is waiting for their "big break", which may never come. Truthfully, if I saw one for $10, I'd totally buy it... even at $20, sure. But, I fully expect it to go nowhere, it'd be purely for tinkering.
Reaperman #17 Posted June 28, 2011 (edited) I'll buy it if I ever see one for sale, but I don't expect that I'll be following this project. Kind of reeks a bit of 'NES Rom Maker' issues. It's not like there is a shortage of similar open source handhelds. Edited June 28, 2011 by Reaperman

It's not like there is a shortage of similar open source handhelds. I didn't make the NESRM connection, but you're right. The price was what made this thing distinctive. $20 or less is the perfect impulse buy amount. But, now that you mention it, I wonder how they arrived at that figure... were they actually quoted a wholesale cost for the unit, or just pulling numbers out of fantasyland? StoneAgeGamer #19 Posted June 28, 2011 They are actually smart making it so cheap because really that's the only chance it would have to be somewhat successful. The question is can they actually make it for under $20? Very tough.
Skarrj #20 Posted June 28, 2011 This will be setting right beside that ingenious Phantom gaming console soon....right out there in vapor land. It appears a 2nd grader designed the case, the website and the buisness model.
nathanallan #21 Posted June 28, 2011 However weird things look, I will remain hopeful. ANY of the handhelds have a lot of potential, it just has to be done right.

If I read right on the website, there will be some sort of online download portal (I'm guessing a shop). My guess is they would get a portion of the proceeds from what is sold there. I will not need to contribute anything except the bank account number to deposit the mad profits into! IMO the Dingoo has rendered a lot of this stuff obsolete.
