+bennybingo #1 Posted July 1, 2011 I have a 34" toshiba CRT televison from the late 90's or early 2000's (which has served me well), and I have been running all of my systems off of it for years. Just today, my games running off the RF cable w/ converter stopped getting signal. The TV still works fine for my RCA connected systems. The TV, when on channel 3, used to provide the typical "white snow" prior to turning on the RF console. Now, the "white snow" is more of a very dark gray, and the picture shows no response when the connected games are powered on or off. Nothing. I have checked the coaxial hub on the TV and it is not shaky or loose in any way. I have swapped out RF/coaxial converters to no avail. Nothing here seems to be helping. If anyone has experienced this, please let me know if there is an easy fix, or if I am looking at the need for a new TV. Any assistance here would be appreciated! Drixxel #3 Posted July 3, 2011 While I haven't encountered this particular issue, there are a few things I'd be checking if it happened to me. If you have cable TV at your place, it might be worth testing it as a source, be it analog cable straight into your TV from a cable outlet or through a digital cable box via coax. Maybe try hooking up a VCR or a DVD player to the TV's RF in if, perhaps, that's an easier way to test out an additional source. Also, is the dark grey that you're seeing on channel 3 the same on every other channel you tune the TV to, or are you getting that familiar 'no signal' snow on channels other than 3? Depending on what consoles we're talking about here, you may be able to choose an alternate from channel 3 where the signal comes through, whether it's a slider on the RF switch itself or on the console. If you're getting absolutely nothing coming through when your TV's on its cable/TV input when a source is properly connected, it may be that the TV tuner in your television has gone a little funky. If you're having no problem when your consoles are hooked up with composite, which bypasses the TV tuner, one solution would be to upgrade your setup to make composite connections the standard used by your consoles. One other explanation worth ruling out would be if your TV has somehow gotten onto its air/antenna mode, if that's even available. If you're unable to tune your TV any higher than, say, channel 13 or thereabouts, or if the message 'AIR' flashes on your screen when you're changing channels or flipping back to the cable input, maybe take a peek in the TV settings and see if anything there jumps out at you. I honestly don't think that's the problem here, but hey, why not poke around the TV's menu anyway and see what you see?
nathanallan #4 Posted July 3, 2011 You said through a converter, what does the TV do without the converter? Still the same darker gray screen?? What converter are you using?
+bennybingo #5 Posted July 3, 2011 You said through a converter, what does the TV do without the converter? Still the same darker gray screen?? What converter are you using? The TV is the same on all channels. Dark gray snow. No response to other consoles, vcr's or cable. Just nothing. My RCA inputs work fine...just the coax port. At this point, I figure that there is either a broken solder point in the coax port or a short. Either way, Yurkie suggested that I do not open the TV up (unless I really feel like getting electrocuted) and I agree with him entirely. I think my course of action will be to purchase a new TV or just mod my 7800 for RCA or S-Video. Anyone know of a good member here who could mod my 7800??? Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Check your local phonebook and look for television repair. You might get lucky. I shiver to think if one of my 'Atari'/CRT' TV's died.
