Segataritensoftii #1 Posted July 11, 2011 Do you think compression technologies of the time would have been enough to allow the cartridge to hold all that information? I know Resident Evil 2 was on two discs on the Playstation, and I think they managed to compress at least most of that onto an N64 cartridge (with somewhat grainy quality). Maybe they would have had to cut out an age and/or take lots of shortcuts with real time and precalculated rendering. What do you think?
Austin #2 Posted July 12, 2011 I think if they cut out all the FMV and voice acting, it could have been done without a problem.. That's what most-likely eats up a good majority of the space on a Myst CD.. Adding in all the FMV, provided it all could be compressed nice and carts could go above 512mbit (I'm not sure if there's a limit, but that's the size of RE2), it may have been possible.. tz101 #3 Posted July 12, 2011 N64 carts, just like NES and SNES before it, had the extra space inside for an extended PCB. With a full-size PCB and additional chips, most anything was possible.
Mark Wolfe #4 Posted July 12, 2011 I've ben playing conker's bad fur day recently, that is a 512Mb cart, the largest for the N64 and it has a ton of voice acting on it. I think myst could have been done as a two cart release perhaps but did we need as many iterations of myst that we got? I mean that game was everywhere and I always saw it on sale shelves at game stores for pennies on the dollar.
DickNixonArisen #5 Posted July 12, 2011 Man what a weird idea. Myst is... not good; and the N64 was seriously flawed. It would have been a bad marriage.
Rex Dart #6 Posted July 13, 2011 What do you think would happen If Sunsoft had been crazy enough to port Myst to the Nintendo 64? Many, many dollars would be lost.
DickNixonArisen #7 Posted July 14, 2011 (edited) Yea, won't someone PLEASE think of the dollars? Edit: Myst was awful on the DS (too small to click buttons), but it would be good on the wii. Release myst and riven as budget disc or have them separately in the shop. Edited July 14, 2011 by DickNixonArisen
Austin #8 Posted July 14, 2011 Or to the above comment, at least bring Real Myst to the Wii.
