Wiring Atari Wireless Controllers

Recommended Posts

Ok, I received a wireless controller set. Couple of things ...

Would I be correct in guessing the button on this receiver is not original?

Edit: Upon closer inspection, it appears this receiver was modded for a separate power module. Good idea in that you can power it off, but bad in that it requires a separate supply.

The power plug that goes from the receiver to the console is gone. I assume I just need a mono plug and + and - wires? Looks like + needs to be soldered to the outside (nearest the edge of the PCB). Correct?

Here's another receiver I got (different auction). Anyone want to play "3 Guesses" and tell me what's wrong with the picture?

Edit: This is still a WTF.

Finally got around to looking at this some more.

I fired up the modified receiver with the button, and it seems to work ok. I tested both of my left joysticks, and they do work without any need for adjustment. This is good, in that joysticks can be swapped. :) But bad in that only one pair of left/right controllers can be in use at one time. :(

Anyway, while testing, I put in Missile Command, which requires lots of diagonal movement. I found it very difficult to hit the diagonal sweet spot using the wireless controllers. To see if I could find a culprit I pulled the controllers apart and both of them appear to be like-new on the inside. The plastic stick is unflexed and the metal contact pads are very responsive.

So is this just the way they are? Crappy diag control on these wireless controllers?
