a better DK jr 2600

Recommended Posts

Perhaps some of you have recently watched the trailer for the "new" Donkey Kong INTV. It looks great! Now, I feel that DK jr for the 2600 was a shoddy conversion- as opposed to it's 7800 counterpart, which is excellent. Could it be cleaned up? For example: more detailed and more defined sprites, fruit on the vines, and music?

You may want to proof-read your posts before posting... ;)

All I know is that programming for the 2600 is never easy.

Just a note. I did this hack a few years ago. Somewhat better looking, but still a crappy conversion.

DK Jr. Improved

"Sick of Donkey Kong Jr. looking like something a monkey might throw?" :rolling:

I'm curious, could you not get the fruit in there?

Actually, it's quite easier to program for a console with actual video RAM and a video display processor that does the job of displaying the graphics on the screen for you. That's what I have with the CV, and most other consoles from that era. With the Atari 2600, you have to draw everything on the TV screen manually, as I understand it, and that's the main reason why I don't see myself ever programming anything for the 2600. On the plus side, those passionate homebrewers who do tackle the challenge of programming for the 2600 have all my respect. :)

In fact :

Programming on Atari 2600 is like climb the Everest with summer shoes...

Programming on a Colecovision is like climb a San Francisco Hill with the cable car....

So my strong respect to all 2600 programmers too.

Just a graphical hack, an entire homebrew, hack all around, what do you want?

for now... fruit and the 7800 music. If you want to turn DK into Saddam, Mario into George W. Bush and DK jr into William Shatner go right ahead! :)

I couldn't resist.....

Where's Shatner?

:)

So I made a new sprite for DK jr (Saddam's kid). I'm still pretty new at this, but what do you think so far?
