Cool interview on TechTV Mike about Beserk VE and the whole home brew scene in general... :-) I could have done better but you'll have to do...

:D :D :D :D :D :D

It was also cool to see SCSICide explained and demonstrated on TV :-) I'm unbelievably jelous.

What? Where? When? I rarely watch TechTV (although it is how I found this place!) What show, and will it be re-aired? Or did somebody catch it on TiVo?

WOW!

But reprogramming these old games is easy in the 21st century. All you need are a few tools:

A computer. A PC is preferred because most of the software needed has been developed for the PC, but a Mac will work, too.

Compiler software from sites such as AtariAge.

Emulator software (again from home-brew gaming sites). This simulates the game on your computer.

"So you compile some of the code, you put it on the emulator, and it comes up and you just start tweaking a little bit in the code. You kind of learn from modifying other people's work, and that's kind of the whole scene," Mika says.

WOW! I never knew it was SO easy! Shoot! I think I'll brew up a couple of games before bed! I just happen to have ALL of those things!  :D :D

But I wanna SEE these people on the TV, not just read about it!

And why doesn't Atariage rate a link at the bottom of the page? I mean, yeah they are linked in the story, but would it have KILLED these people to include a second link at the bottom?

Oh, and thanks for the link NE146! :)

It was a segment on TechLive about Atari 2600 homebrewing... it was basically just an interview with Mike and his opinions on everything... I doubt it will be re-run as it is a live news show, but the link NE gave pretty much sums it up...

You will never believe how suprised I was when I was flipping channels and saw SCSICide on TV :-)

Ah ha ha... yeah in the TV spot they didn't mention it was easy :-) and AtariAge got a big push from the TV spot, when they zoomed in on the AtariAge emulators page and mentioned you can buy new homebrew games from AtariAge for around $25.

That's really cool and all, but (1) it's not easy to make a 2600 or any other homebrew game, not for the people who are reading that information for the first time and (2) AtariAge isn't even mentioned in the links?

Thanks, all!

You know, I haven't even seen it yet. I didn't find out when it was going to be on until Tues. morning.

About it being easy, I can see how that is getting interpreted. What was meant by that is that it is easy for someone to get the tools and the means to make the game. It's not a proprietary club like modern console development, although we did go into that a little bit (Xbox dev, etc.), but I doubt that made it into the short spot. All TechTV means by "easy" is that the information is out there for anyone who wants to give it a shot.

Oh, and come on, 2600 programming, it's a piece of cake! ;)

Mike
