Favorite Sounds / Noises from Atari Games

Recommended Posts

I like to hear different opinions from new people on Atari games and this one hasn't been done in a while.

What are your favorite noises, sounds, music from Atari games?

My favorites would be:

The sound of the explosion of the small fast ships in Atlantis. The bass is really fun.

The 'You Win' sound when you get the chalice back to the Yellow Castle in Adventure

The 'Zots' scary music in Tunnel Runner (especially the fact that it gets louder the closer you get to one)

The 'pew pew pew' of the shots being fired in Asteroids

Last but not least, the tarzan yell in Pitfall when you grab a vine.

2600 explosions in general are awesome. The sound of your guy getting fried in Berzerk adds to the anxiety big time.

Modern homebrew music and sounds are incredible as well!

The echo-y explosions when you score a hit in Missile Command.

The bum-bum-bum-bum bass in Asteroids.

The 'You Win' sound when you get the chalice back to the Yellow Castle in Adventure

Seconded ^

Missile Command on the Atari 2600 has the best sounds. I also really like the 'pew-pew' sounds in H.E.R.O. Oh, and the happy music that plays in Pitfall II when you pick up a bar of gold!

Heh, I used a sample of one of my favorite 2600 sound effects in the intro of a song I recorded. I challenge anybody to click the link in my sig, play the song "We Got Along", and name the game those sound effects come from. Don't worry, they're the very first thing you hear so you don't have to wait.

I always liked the little start tune in Pressure Cooker myself. Pitfall II's music was amazing as well. I'm not sure if the Reactor background sounds count as music but they were pretty cool.

The semi-random noises generated by Outlaw when both players are shot at the same time. Both sound channels end up playing the "die" sound either at the same time, or roughly the same time, and the modulation between the two creates a whole new sound, and not always the same one. It still giggle when it happens.

Wizard of Wor also makes interesting sounds when both players die at roughly the same time. Only one sound channel gets used, but it seems the code for the sound of the second player's death gets pushed in while the sound of the first player's death is still playing, causing a funny musical collision.

Yars' Revenge has the best sound all around, in my opinion. Pump that through a good home theater sound system and you can prove that even 30-year-old games can have kickin' bass and awesome explosions.

Millipede gets points for reproducing the arcade sounds more faithfully than Centipede did. Hearing the flea drop and the extra-life chime the way they were meant to be heard are nice little touches on a game that was already one of the 2600 catalog's highlights.

Midnight Magic has my favorite musical bits. I especially like how they used the volume controls to give the notes a percussive fade effect, instead of the usual on-then-off tones. Other games had done that before (Frogger and California Games, among others), but it's best heard here, I think.

Reactor's got some righteous digitized farts

I was going to say Space Invaders for exactly that reason -- the death of the player is a spot-on fart noise. My first Atari memory is laughing at the farting noises!

The CHOOM CHOOM CHOOM of your ship's guns in Solaris. And the repeated explosion sounds of a planet blowing up.

Nothing says we're all gonna die like that PSSSSHHHHAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUU before that final 'splosion when you lose in Missile Command.

Pretty much every sound that Yars' Revenge makes.

That hideous splat noise in Circus Atari to go with the grisly death of having one's head pouring onto the floor while the body's still twitching.

Raiders of the Lost Ark death sounds. I used to imagine those Keebler elf cookies making similar sounds as they had little bites taken out of them the same was that Indy died.

Although the sounds in Tutenkham are themselves nothing special, the way the footsteps have different beeps and boops depending on level somehow helped to convey a sense of getting deeper into a ruin. Great atmospheric touch.

The music in Mountain King. Especially when you have the crown and that song plays, and it adds that extra track to it.

And this.

I LOVE the car engine sound in Enduro. Both when you're accelerating (and shifting gears) and when it's humming along evenly as you cruise down the road.
