New House, New Wife, Same NES by my SIDE

Recommended Posts

Well, I left the states to start a new life in Merida, Yucatan in Mexico, while the stuff I kept was very limited I was stuck between keeping the NES or the SNES, well even after I got a brand spanking new SNES in Christmas of 1991 I really wanted a NES (didnt get one untill October 1994)

Sold my SNES collection for 250 dollars and kept the NES and 60 games, now I am here desperate for new games, I am ecited to hear there is an ample Famicom Pirate market here in Mexico I just have to start looking for Famicom carts.

My Wife wants to play Ice Climber but I dont own it, lets see if I can locate it or its Famicom counterpart. I am now slowly trying to beat the SMB3 hack Mario Adventure which I have in cart form, I have allready completed worlds 1 and 2 working on world 3.

Just wanted to share that with you guys

That's an awesome area. Progreso is fairly near by, and it is on a very short list of places that I would love to live. (I tend to enjoy living in tourist destinations, and in retirement I will likely leave the US)

I liked everything about the area, except that I don't speak the language. Despite my immersion in a primarily spanish-speaking community for half a decade, I've picked up very little of it.

I remember seeing an awful lot of Neo Geo MVS units in the shops last time I was there (3-4 years ago), so there must be, or must have been, a supplier around. The cabinets had some ammusing hacks in them. 'Exporting' the carts via ebay might prove profitable.

ordering games and systems off epay is still an option for you if you cannot find much good stuff locally.

That would be the hardest thing to get used to in moving to a foreign country, the lack of good gaming stuff readily available. I live in an area where there is ample stuff to be found at flea markets, yard sales, and charity thrifts. I could not imagine living in a "dead video gaming area". That is probably why I would never move to any foreign nation, among other reasons. I have amassed an amazing collection of everything from Intellivision to Master System to SNES to Sega CD to N64 to Dreamcast over the past two years. That could never have been accomplished in the area you are now living in.

What's your definition of a "dead video gaming area"? I live in north Florida, where there's not a darn thing to find about classic gaming. Only 1 classic store, which doesn't carry much, no gaming groups, etc. Everything I get is from eBay or AA. This is my definition of a "dead video gaming area".

I'm in much the same situation in Alabama. I think it's a problem with the southeastern US in general: if we were in almost any other part of the country, there would be shows or groups within a few hours' drive, but there's very little related to classic gaming and computing down here.

Perhaps the OP would consider picking up a multicart for the NES. In the long run, it would be much cheaper than buying and shipping in multiple games from outside the country, and it would also save wear and tear on the cartridge slot.

That's probably a reason I could not live in southeastern US either. The biggest helps to my game collecting have been the 13 Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores within a 40 minute radius of my house. The deals found in those stores have been amazing. Also, it doesn't hurt that there are 4 retro game stores within a half hour's drive. I used to live in a more desolate rural area and probably could not have built my collection there either. I guess its all about location, location, location. If I had to build my collection on epay and AA alone, I would have gone broke.

i don't know if this will work for you or not. I picked up a famiclone for $10 in one of the lotle mexican stores in my area - inside was a bare famicom multicart pcb in a cart slot - i popped it out - found an old 5 screw gyromite with the fami adapter and with a little dremeling to the case, got it to fit perfectly. now i have a gyromite encased multicart that fits in my standard nes - has about 30 games including ice climber, popeye, baloon fight, donkeykong3, contra smb circus charlie and a duck hunt hack called ufo hunt.

i am very happy.
