+cmart604
I'd like to congratulate Phil in advance on winning this round! By the way cparsley, wouldn't it be 1:40 in your example above??
cparsley
Yes it is, that's why it says so... How about you get behind the wheel and start racing...

+thegoldenband
Game : Auto Racing Niiiiiice. I'd like to congratulate Phil in advance on winning this round! Hey, I never said I was good at the game! Actually I think it's pretty tough, and am looking forward to getting better at it through the HSC. +thegoldenband
OK, here's my first attempt at Course #1, using the Red car, with a time of 3:37. BTW everyone should check out the manual on this game (available here among other places), since it has the course layouts and info about the cars. Tan and Blue can go almost twice as fast as White, but good luck on those corners! Edited August 1, 2011 by thegoldenband
+cmart604
Yes it is, that's why it says so... How about you get behind the wheel and start racing... :rolling: Aaah, the magic of editing posts.... Got behind the wheel last night with rather weak results. I am not a fan of the steering on this game, at times I'll be in a groove doing my Tokyo drift thing, then next thing you know I'm careening off into some time-sucking lake for no apparent reason (Well, probably my bad driving is the reason). I have probably ten copies of this game and not one of them is the 'fixed" steering version. For what they are worth my times, all with the red car, are:Track #1 - 5:07, Track #2 - 8:15, Track #3 - 9:56, Track #4 - 11:15, Track #5 - 6:49. Total of 41:22 I believe. I'm sure I could get most of those lower, particularly the first one, as I was just getting a feel for the steering. The fifth one is a pain in the butt, you do not want to crash as there are only two checkpoints and you can get sent back rather far depending on where you crash. Last place locked up once again!!! cparsley
Your actually in the lead by one hour and 22 minutes (give or take a few seconds). Also I do believe if you have the first edition, there is a code you can key to get the "intuitive" style steering out of it instead. Akito01
Track 1 = 4:55 I'm taking a one-track-at-a-time approach for this challenge. In fact, the only version I have of this game is the one included with Intellivision Lives DS. This comes with a specific set of advantages and disadvantages. The obvious advantage is the ability to use a conventional d-pad for left-right steering. The disadvantage is that the emulation suffers from a similar vertical-offset display error that Minotaur does. Every time you crash, the screen moves slightly down a few pixels. Crash too many times, and you can end up with an ending screen that simply says 'finish', because the lap/time display has been completely cut off from the bottom. In order to get this finish screen, I had to completely avoid crashing at all.

cparsley
Hmmm, I don't know about being able to use either non-original hardware or the actual dumped rom file (ala Nostalgia/jvintz etc) to play. I'm going to have to grab my DS, dang you. (anyone else can also chime in please on your feelings for or against)
Akito01
Don't forget to grab a second DS, since Auto Racing only unlocks when in multiplayer mode. The rules indicate emulation is alright, but I also acknowledge that it wouldn't be my first choice, and I don't feel strongly enough about this particular game challenge to put up a vigorous defense. Some games I definitely wouldn't use this collection for (AD&D/Crown of Kings lets you run through the walls when you hold down on the touch screen, for example), but Auto Racing seems fine apart from the display errors. 1980gamer
Okay, I have some times. I hope to play some more. I remember playing this game a bunch back in the day. One of the games I got with the system in 1981. Track 1 3:11 I played this track a ton. Not bad for 2 attempts and arrow keys. Track 2 5:50 Track 3 7:29 I didn't play this one much, so 2 more tries should lower my time. Track 4 9:09 Wow, I am loosing faith... Need to learn this course. Track 5 3:53 I played this a bunch.. I don't remember if this is a good time though? All using car 3. Total time : 29:32 I think? Did I do my conversion correct?
cparsley
I havent made the determination yet Akito, I have sent for a higher calling on the issue (got some friends who know whether its the actual software rom file being done via emu on the DS, or if it was totally rewritten like the plug n plays were. If it was done via a emu, then Im fine (as long as nothing non-normal is available) (as you stated AD&D would be DQ'ed from it). However, if it's like the plug 'n play Astrosmash, then it's a no go. In the meantime, keep racing, I'll get back to u as quickly as I can.
+thegoldenband
Akito01, do you need a copy of Auto Racing? I have a bunch of loose spares and would be happy to send you one for free (though I'd welcome a contribution towards the cost of shipping). Drop me a PM if you're interested. +cmart604
Alright, played each one again and improved rather susbstantially on almost all of them (really sloppy on #4 but still improved). I suspect I can improve on all of them, especially #4. I played #5 twice and got 4:21 both times! My new times are: Track #1 - 3:41, Track #2 - 6:56 , Track #3 - 8:05, Track #4 - 10:27, Track #5 - 4:21 (I used the white car for this, much better handling). New total is: 33:30 (Not a bad improvement if I don't say so myself!)

1980gamer
Played a few times during the rain... It seems that the red car is the sweet spot. Green handles very well, but it is just to slow! Cars 4-5 are fast but just don't handle enough to stay out of skids and the grass plus they don't get back up to speed very quickly. I am hoping to play a bit more near the end of the week. New course 3 time of 6:47 Was 7:29 New course 4 time of 8:23 Was 9:09 I would imagine these times will not hold up. +thegoldenband
Wasn't able to play much Intellivision over the past week because of a family emergency, but now that that's resolved, I've at least logged scores for all five courses, and trimmed my time for #1 by a couple seconds. Very mediocre scores on tracks #2-#4, but I hope to improve a bit in the next two days, though track #4 gets pretty tedious. Track #5 was surprisingly fun, especially once you find the little shortcut halfway through, but getting my time down below 4:00 will be tough! #1: 3:35 #2: 7:19 #3: 9:19 #4: 12:22 #5: 4:13 Edited August 12, 2011 by thegoldenband
1980gamer
4:13 with the white car! Wow, I actually think that is the hardest car to use on course 5. It handles to well. I need the car to slide around the tight corners, the white car just doesn't work for me. It looks like I am going to need to get a few more runs in on track 5! Very impressive time! Hey, thanks very much! I find that the white car works well for me since I'm able to slide across the grass outcroppings on the corner, but am also able to accelerate quickly once I've crossed them. Meanwhile I actually shaved 19 seconds off my time, down to 3:54 on track 5 -- just one second away from your benchmark now! I had a couple minor crashes so I think I can push it to at least 3:45 if I have a crash-free run. 1980gamer
SHORT CUT! Hmmm, I found 5 short cuts. The first may save 3 seconds per lap. The second about 5 seconds per lap. The third may be slower... It is a hard turn and the grass is a slow area. The forth saves 8-10 second per lap. The fifth one I found is 10-15 seconds per lap!! You can use 1 or 2 and 4 or 5 combined. You can use 3 and 4 or 5 combined but 3 stinks! This is not an official submission... But a racing using the various combos.... meaning you could get lower than this.... 3:05 on course five.
