+GroovyBee #1 Posted August 2, 2011 I currently have the BBC micro and Acorn Electron source code for Chuckie Egg. For anybody that doesn't know the game, check out the wiki page here. BBC Micro screenshots :- Level 1 screenshot (at Moby Games) Level 2 screenshot (at Moby Games) Both sets of source code have comments and don't look (at first glance) to be too hard on Zero Page RAM usage which should ease porting. The final game will not be released on cart and will be an 7800 XM mandatory release. There is no fixed release date for the first binary.
+GroovyBee #3 Posted August 2, 2011 My game Harry's Hen House is a tribute to the first two levels of Chuckie Egg. My game's physics don't match the original BBC micro version but at least its a taste of things to come.
cd-w #4 Posted August 3, 2011 My game Hunchy 2 started out as an attempt to port Chuckie Egg to the 2600. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Chris
+GroovyBee #5 Posted August 3, 2011 The BBC micro and Electron doesn't have any hardware sprites so there is plenty of XORing with the background going on. The first version will probably be PAL (due to the 256 pixel high screen) monochrome and in 320A with a full screen linear video frame buffer. Once that's going and its working under joystick control I'll move it over to 7800 native to get more colours on screen. My game Hunchy 2 started out as an attempt to port Chuckie Egg to the 2600. I think it would be quite a challenge to do a 2600 version of it. What made you change the game into something else?
cd-w #6 Posted January 25, 2012 I think it would be quite a challenge to do a 2600 version of it. What made you change the game into something else? The main problem was the horizontal sprite limitations on the 2600. Having lots of eggs and chickens on the same horizontal row could only be done with a lot of flicker. +GroovyBee #7 Posted January 25, 2012 I was thinking about this game recently. I was asked to do a development blog for the port by Retro Software so as soon as I get more of my XM projects completed I'll start an ad-hoc series on it.
cd-w #8 Posted January 25, 2012 Great - it would be nice to have a 7800 version. I'm a big BBC micro fan - it has lots of nice titles that are almost unknown outside the UK (Repton, Castle Quest, Chuckie Egg, Citadel, etc). Chris
