4-switch woody on display at Disney's Pop Century

Recommended Posts

post-12574-0-51920400-1312594316_thumb.jpg

This is a display box in the lobby of the Disney's Pop Century resort hotel at Walt Disney World. This is part of a display that runs the length of the wall with examples of cultural "pop" items from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. The curious thing is, this display appears in the 80's section, where I would think an NES would be the more appropriate choice. This 2600, or even better, an original Heavy Sixer (...maybe I could donate mine to them?) really belongs in the 70's. Their 80's display doesn't include any videogaming system, but does feature an Apple IIc as well as an ad for the Timex Sinclair.

You want your H6 glued to the wall? I'll take it instead!

The VCS was from the end of the 70's to the beginning of the 90's. It had all of the 80's. The NES only had about 7 years of the 80's , wasn't released in Australia until 87, and wasn't discontinued until 03. It had all of the 90's. Also, that four switch in the display was released in 1980.

Looks like someone hit ebay, then took the crap the seller pooped in the box, and hung it on the wall. D- is their grade for this high school project. Come on Disney, you can't make a better display box than this? Who do you have working there? Oh I forgot, Mickey Mouse.

But the Apple IIc was out from 84-89 according to Wikipedia (I had an IBM so I dunno) That was the typo then? Still wrong that was supposed to be the 80's

I was typing this before I read your post:

You would think they would of picked a system and carts that are in a better condition. Also, why is there a Vader joystick and why is everything all over the place? It looks like a lot on ebay.

Hmm... I thought he was saying that since the VCS should of been in the 70's case that he meant 70's. I reread almightytodd's post and now I'm confused with you. :D

You have to see it in the context in which it's set. They have 15-20 of these type of "shadow boxes" in the lobby of Pop Century with items appropriate to the period (30' - 00's). It's actually really cool. As far as getting down to joystick style? Nobody outside of this realm is really gonna care or even recognize something like that. This is produced for the masses.

I think I'm confused now too! What WAS I trying to say? Let me start over and say that I think a more representative accounting of the progression of video game systems as cultural icons in the 70's, 80's and 90's would be 70's = Atari, 80's = Nintendo, and 90's = PlayStation. The 90's display features a Sega system...

The 70's section doesn't feature any video game systems - but a sign outside along the walking path (incorrectly) states that "Pong" was the "first" video game, released in 1972...

Well, those who fail to remember history are doomed to repeat it. Those who remember history wrong... ...I guess they're doomed to rake in huge profits at nostalgic places of business, from future generations who pass on the erroneous recollections to their decendents while feeling nostalgia over events that didn't actually take place in the way they now remember them...

This philosophy is encapsulated in the official description of Disney's Hollywood Studios as, "The Hollywood that never was, and always will be"...

I think the original 6 switch 2600s encapsulate the styling of the 70s, while the updated 4 switchers say 80s. Therefore, I think the 4 switcher is correctly placed in the 80s section.

BTW, what is that rapid fire thing in the back of the 4 switch controller port in the top of this thread? Were they common? Where can I get one?

Yeah, I was wondering the same. Notice it says "paddle rapid fire", so I wonder if it only works with the paddles, and not the sticks. Strange that Disney would have it connected, as it apparently wasn't a popular item as far as I know.

I had one in the 80s called turbo fire. It was a a little box with a dial on it and had a cord about as long as a joystick cable so it served as an extension as well. The rapid fire wasn't terribly useful as most games only allowed one or two shots anyway, it was really more like autofire. I don't think they were all that popular as I don't recall any of my friends having one.

I can't see were it says "paddle" on it, but I would imagine it works with the joystick fire button. I can't think of any paddle games that need rapid fire at the moment.

eta: I was actually called "lazer quick fire" and I found a thread about the device with pics.

Weird, but you're right. I must have imagined it. I was viewing it on my phone, so maybe the small image looked like "paddle fire" instead of "rapid fire". My bad.

NES was a foreign invasion, so Pong, VCS and Apple 2 are the better choice. Sega, well sort of American too.

As for Pong being the first video game, in a broad sense, yes.

Thanks. After going to ebay and typing in VG169 into the search I found one for 22.49 and 4.41 shipping. A little high in my opinion. But antique accessories are always high no adays.

What the crap? I thought Dreamcast was released in 1999 (well, Wikipedia says late 1998). That's barely '90s at all! Of course, since it was discontinued in 2001, it's hardly '00s, either. Hmm.
