Gauntlet vs Drol

Recommended Posts

i just downloaded tons of old atari games...

drol has a cool sprite engine which is really fast for the big sprites... they use Antic mode e for the grafix...

what confused me is that the gauntlet version from us gold is done in antic mode e as well... why the hell????

i just wondered why they haven't used the 5th color because i thought that they were doing it in antic 4... but then i entered the monitor of atari 800win and saw that donmark used highres mode... why the hell??? they have tons of sprites on screen... and they do not move smooth... so it would be better to have antic 4 instead...

do you see any reasons for using mode e vs 4 in gauntlet????

yes, I was looking two days ago also at the graphics of Gauntlet, and thought they were using mode 4, because it the ghost etc are moving like characters, but when I saw the display list i thought too : why ??

DROL is really a fine Game belonging to SW-Sprites and the Scroll-Engine

It Overlaps that BIG Softwaresprites incl. the Background-Pillars.

GAUNTLET is one of the GAMES it was better never to see. Such Crape and never the less bad adapted GAME... let's think to throw the ATARI away (never did :) )

It was a basically convertion from other Systems. Maybe the use of a Hi-Res-Mode made the Game easier to convert.

easier to convert from spectrum or armstrad... ;)

they use approx. 32 "unique" chars... so why antic e..... unbelievable... and then the status lines... just players as "transparent overlays"... 1 color font.... etc...

for using high res mode the game itself does not flicker and scrolls smooth... so not too bad... but the game itself could much more better and more dynamic when using other mode... aaarg... ;)

the good thing is that they used DLIs... which do not flicker... so they must know wsync $d40a... ;) ;)

As it is, Gauntlet could have more than 8 Colors for real to built the Leveldesign.

The Score Display could have been made like the Scores in ADMIRANDUS...hires and with four Colours. The PMG used for aditional Graphiceffects... > 500% better Graphics without any complex programming!

This deseased Game tried me to think about a Diplay Mode, which is able to show more colors in Games ;)

I doubt that the original arcade machine works this way.AFAIK this game was available for ATARI ST ,Spectrum,Amstrad which can only use bitmap-graphics.

There´s also a C64 version , which isn´t too great and a Nintendo NES version.

Maybe more versions (MSX,AMIGA or others) which I don´t know.

I think they just ported the game fast without using XL´abilities.

But you have the same problems with games on the C64 that look 100% like Spectrum games (but are a lot slower) or AMIGA games that look like ATARI ST games (but are some % slower).

Idea : Someone should get the Arcade version and make a new port.

The XL/XE conversion of GAUNTLET is adapted from C64 very shure.

As always done in hundreds of other games: Converted from a bigger Machine to C64 with the handycaps and capabilities of the C64... then converted to the XL/XE, added with the handycaps of the XL/XE, without using the capabilities of the XL/XE.

There are also games which have been converted from ATARI to C64 - ever seen C64 Ballblazer ? It´s really bad.

or C64 Koronis Rift.

And Spellbound for example : The C64 version looks like the Spectrum version , the ATARI version has a more colorful graphics. But no music , because it should fit in 48K.

Mercenary is quite slow on the C64 , quite fast on ATARI ...

I think ATARI XE Dark Chambers is better than Gauntlet.

I did never play Gauntlet much , because I had Gauntlet 2 on the ATARI ST which was MUCH better and supported 4-Player-adaptor.

This should be possible on XL,too , except the samples maybe.
