Jr. Pac
Tonight, I just wanted to play a quick round of Ms. Pac-Man on my good ol' 2600 and my brand new CX-40. I turned it on and started the game, but the right joystick direction all the sudden died on me and I can't go right. What's wrong?
BDW
Have you tried the Russian method? That normally fixes my stuff.
Amstari
Test the joystick in the player 2 socket on a two player game to ensure the joystick is working. Look at the pins in the socket. One of them might be bent or even pushed in. You might be able to bend it back.
Jr. Pac
It indeed works fine on the 2nd player port.

Maybe your Atari 2600 heard you say "all of the sudden" and it tried to tell you you weren't right the only way it knew how?

Jr. Pac
back to the stick, what's wrong?
Seob
It's not the joystick, as you said it worked fine in the second port. So the problem would be in the first joystick port. Maybe bend pins like mentioned above, or dirt has build up on the pins, or the pins may be corroded in the first joystick port.
Jr. Pac
What do I do to fix that?
Schizophretard
Have you inspected the port? Any pins bent?
SlowCoder
What do I do to fix that? I use a small toothbrush doused in alcohol to scrub the insides of the ports. You want to be gentle so as not to bend the pins. Does the joystick work at all; any direction or fire button?
zylon
I'd try pushing the plug one way or another to determine if a port is loose or if a pin broke on back of the port. If pushing it to the side causes the directions to work, you found the problem.
Jr. Pac
Yes. The joystick works great on my other 2600, plus the stick is brand new.
SlowCoder
Yes. The joystick works great on my other 2600, plus the stick is brand new. I meant, does the joystick work at all when plugged into port 1 of the "broken" 2600? Edited August 10, 2011 by SlowCoder

Jr. Pac
Thanks, Slowcoder! Now it works just great. I guess my original cleaning wasn't good enough.

Jr. Pac
Actually, it just "broke" again. It turns out it was a problem with the extension cable I was using, not the system or joystick.

It turns out it was a problem with the extension cable I was using, not the system or joystick. When writting a short story such as this has become it is always pertinent to include all details. You could not describe a main character by merely including the fact that he is round and yellow. One might assume your character would be called Homer? Thus, more information would be needed to get the whole picture. Including the fact that you were using your controller with an extender would have been very helpful in determining the cause of said faulty controller...or port....with a little more information, your main character could resemble Pac-Man and you then would have a complete story? glad to here it is working fine as you mentioned it was a new Atari console.... Jr. Pac
Sorry about that... It was a normal common 9-pin one male one female end cable. I don't really need it now that I have a little game center/display in my room.
Schizophretard
I think it is funny you never said anything about the extension cord but I'm happy that is all it was.
