How old is your daily used NES?

Recommended Posts

How long ago did you get your current NES (toaster or top load) and where did it come from?

Folks Im talking about the NES you use every day your (daily driver) in simple terms this is not about the decks you have stored away, this is about the one you have in use right now.

I have a late-era FRONT LOADING NES that I picked up in a trade for a SNES Jr. back in High School around 2002, it a very particular model for me since it has the 1800 Nintendo number inside the plastic door and I recall only seeing this in systems between 1990 and 1992-3 ish before the switch to the top load. She works woderfully since the day I picked her up in 2002.

I use a frontloader, got it back in 2000 from a flea market and it came with Shadow Warriors (Ninja Gaiden), and a cart of Super Mario Brothers which has different internals, and runs slow.

I have three toasters and a top loader, but among the toasters is my original system from when I was a kid. I still remember going to Target with my mom to get it back in 1991. It came with Super Mario Bros. 3. We also picked up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III with it.

I don't play NES regularly, though.

I don't use it daily, but it's been my main NES since it was purchased in 1989. Part of that set with SMB/DH/WCTM.

I recently disabled the lockout chip & re-bent those cart connector pins and it works fine.

Im thinkin it was 1987 because for my birthday I got the NES system and one game which was Deadly Towers. It was purchased at Childrens Palace on McKnight Rd in the North hills area outside of Pittsburgh. About two years ago I treated it to a gold 72 pin connector and the lock out chip mod.

My "daily driver" is a top loader. I picked it up from a local indy thrift store in a small town near where I grew up for $30 in 2006. She works perfectly.

My brother and I bought the SMB/Duck Hunt set from K-Mart in '87 or '88. I re-bent the pins early last decade and it's still working great. I found a top-loader a couple years ago at a garage sale but I prefer my old toaster.

I use a top loader so of course it would be 1993. I got my current system off ebay when I was buying multiple systems cheap when I was lucky, comparing their condition, keeping the best one, and selling the rest back on there for profit. This was probably the 2nd top-loader unit I have had and it works better than my first did.

The first one I had was fine until a storm that knocked out the power made the room too dark to see. I tripped over the controller, the system fell on the floor from where it was with a game in it, and one connector pin in the system broke. From that point on I had to put the cartridges in at a funny angle to make them work. I ended up selling that one to a game store that repairs systems anyway, and they still gave me $80.

This begs the question: Why is the original front loader called "toaster", even though the top loader looks more like a toaster with bread sticking out when a game cart is inserted?

back in the 80's they had toaster ovens which where very popular back then where you front loaded your bagle/toast/english muffin

I assumed it's called the toaster because of the "push-down" motion required to play.

Our NES is the one my wife got as a gift when she was in college, probably back in 1994-95, and it's a frontloader. We still have the box too, it's the one that came with SMB3 and no zapper.

Mine's a front loader bought around 1986 at a Hills Department Store (somewhere between a Target and Walmart in class) in Terre Haute, IN for $99. Came with the Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt combo.

Thanks. I was too lazy to take a photo of my own, so I stole that pic. But I do have one, and yes, it is cool as sh#t.

I've had my toaster since 1988, got a toploader last year, it has become my dominant NES system as it plays games a bit better than my old trusty toaster model. Eventually I need to service or have serviced the old lady, she deserves playing time without blinking screens to piss me off.

Just remember when you are in there to disable the lock out and no more blink!

I see how some people have pointed out the frontloader's resemblance to a toaster oven: ironic, given that the whole point of the North American redesign was to make the console look more like an adult piece of AV equipment (ie, a VCR, which the frontloader does resemble closely) than a toy. Instead, comparisons to an Easy Bake Oven appear to be more apt.

I started collecting and playing NES in late 2007. My first console was an FC Twin purchased new at the time, and hardware revision must have been recent enough that the NES emulation is near-perfect (sound, compatibility, everything).

About a year and a half later I got my first frontloader at a thrift store; don't know how old it is exactly. It had the blinkies bad so I bent the pins. That helped some but it now has a deathgrip on cartridges. It's actually partially dismantled right now, to remind me to replace the pin connector.

Got a second frontloader about a year after that. Left the pins alone and clipped the chip. Works great and this is my main NES now.

Got a third frontloader about 6 months ago at the same thrift shop. Haven't touched it, but it sits on the shelf with the others. I have a nice stack of NES glory.

I have about 12 or so toasters, I always pick them up when I can get a good deal. We got the first one as a gift from some kids my grandma used to baby sit probably about 10 years ago. I think I got my "daily driver" last year for a couple bucks at a local flea market. It's a little beat up so I use it instead of my nicer ones.
