A2600 #1 Posted August 14, 2011 Extra Mario Bros.has updated graphics and has large levels like METROID, has anyone played this and what are their thoughts? and what should I look out for when playing it.
Koopa64 #2 Posted August 15, 2011 That's what I thought too when I first saw it. It's truly an incredible hack. The original designers of SMB (surely it's more than just Miyamoto) should definitely see it eventually. I too bought a copy of it from TheNESDump (I bet that's where you got yours too). TheGameCollector #4 Posted August 15, 2011 I just found the patch for the game on romhacking.net and applied it. I'm looking forward to playing it on my powerpak. I already had fun beating the NES port of Super Mario Bros. Special from the same site.

Mmmm, those two alone would be worth getting it.
HatefulGravey #10 Posted August 16, 2011 How does one order from this site? I see that nothing will ship until the 25th but I would like to windo shop and get some price ideas and I can find no prices.
Koopa64 #11 Posted August 16, 2011 Are you using TheNESDump? If so, you just have to email coinheaven. His address is in the contact info page on the left column of the site. He tends to have donor carts available, but sometimes he doesn't. The buyer providing a sacrificial cart usually shaves about $5 off the price. He takes Paypal too. Between the 3 major repro sites, NES, Game and NESDump, the latter has by far the fastest turnaround time. Roughly a week, whereas NES is 2 or 3 IIRC and Game is about 1 month, but I think that's due to his often large amount of orders.
A2600 #12 Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) Leon from nesreproductions.com is my personal friend for years I have ordered plenty of carts from him (smb 2j, all night nippon smb, ff2, recca, castlevania chorus of mystery, mario adventure) he is very reliable and cost friendly... Joe from NESDump is a really good guy and his knowlege on nes repros is AMAZING I have purchased I'm Kid Dracula (original hardare with a nes converter inside) and Rockman No Consistancy from him. The Guy from gamereproductions well he is just a .... (no comment) and I have never wanted to buy anything from him Edited August 16, 2011 by A2600
Reaperman #13 Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) The Guy from gamereproductions well he is just a .... (no comment) and I have never wanted to buy anything from him But he's got a shopping cart so I don't have to interact with him (unlike most of the rest). Because of this, all of my NES repros have come from him, and I've never really considered anybody who requires donors or emails as an option. TheGameCollector #15 Posted August 17, 2011 I've never had any problems with the gamereproductions.com guy, and he was quick to answer my questions. This was before he stopped carrying Final Fantasy IIIj though. I was one of the lucky few who got it, and it even happened when a sale was going on. He let me get 4 games for $100, and even though he usually charged more for FF3j he allowed me to be an exception to the rule. I'm glad I got that because I hear the powerpak has issues with FF3j. But now that I have some powerpaks and everdrives, I only really want repros when the games don't work on them correctly.

Today that cart still works and saves fine. Recently I bought an EPROM w/game, a label and a sleeve and am currently waiting for it. I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with GameRepro. He operates like a business, no shame in that. I suppose yes it's a matter of taste whether you'd like to treat the person you're buying from like a person rather than a machine... TheGameCollector #18 Posted August 31, 2011 (edited) Ok after playing here's my opinion. "YOU expect me to play this long, challenging confusing game without there even being a save function? Screw this" This game was made to be played on an emulator with savestates. Edited August 31, 2011 by TheGameCollector

TheGameCollector #20 Posted September 1, 2011 Ok after playing here's my opinion. "YOU expect me to play this long, challenging confusing game without there even being a save function? Screw this" This game was made to be played on an emulator with savestates. Wait........you mean Extra mario Bros does not save? screw that crap..... Seriously, I spent an hour playing and was only to area 3, yet I am a pro at SMB2j. This game is just too long to not save let alone having to start in area 1 and get back to where you were from scratch every time you lose your 5 lives. Some of the tricks are crazy. There's a kind of Goomba that has a helmet on his head that cannot be defeated and there are places where you have to ride him by hopping on his head repeatedly without falling into the chasm below as koopa paratroopas get in your way. There are flashing block on/off switches as well that sometimes become a part of this tightrope shenanigan. Just be warned that if you want to try and beat this game, be prepared to have to stick with your NES on for hours and hours. It may take all day to finish it if you're lucky. It is like Metroid in the way you have to collect a certain hidden item in order to progress farther. Your fireballs will gain the ability to break brick walls, but you still have the challenge of keeping fire Mario without getting hit to utilize that function. Otherwise, you can't go back like in other 2D sidescrollers. You have to complete the level warp pipe loop again if you mess up. If you don't take the right path, you are still stuck going only to the right. I think this game would have been better if it had been based off Super Mario Bros. 3's engine instead of SMB1. Or run the game from a Powerpak and use the save state mappers: http://kkfos.aspekt.fi/projects/nes/powerpak/save-state-mappers/

I use the version of FCE Ultra that allows you to play in fast or slow motion as well. I think it's labeled re-recording? I noticed that some of the really old NES hacks only want to work in NESticle which sucks but functions.
