0078265317 #1 Posted August 15, 2011 (edited) Went to somebody's house for a get together today. They used to have atari 2600 when we were little. But she said she gave it away to salvation army a long time ago. And I have no pictures cuz in the 80's we had no digital and regular photos are probably gone by now. So I don't remember weather it was 4 or 6 switch. All I remember is it was wood grain and black or brownis but I forget if it was 4 or 6 switch. 1 of the kids all grown up now of course said it came with the pong cartridge. But I never had a 2600 as a kid. Only 5200. Does anyone remember? Did pong come with 6 switch originally? Or only 4 switch? Or did 4 switch come with sometihng else? Thanks for any info. My memory is fuzzy just trying to remember how it was when I was younger. I think it looked like this but my memory is foggy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Atari-2600-Wood-4Sw-Set.jpg Edited August 15, 2011 by 0078265317
Schizophretard #2 Posted August 15, 2011 I believe it was Combat up until the Vader. With the Vader it was Combat and Pac-man. I don't think Pong Sports/Video Olympics was a pack in game.

Well she said it came with pong. Nothing about the olympics. Just that it came with pong. And was baught around maybe 79 or 80 ish. All I remember is playing space invaders when I was in elementry or junior high. Edited August 15, 2011 by 0078265317
ntavio #4 Posted August 15, 2011 If the Atari was purchased around 1980 then the pack-in game for the six switcher would have been Combat. If it was a Sears six switcher then Target Fun was the pack-in. Pong Sports is a Sears game and to my knowledge never was a pack-in game.

And it defijately wasn't sears. It was atari. Just don't remember if it was 4 or 6 switch. Looked similar to the link in my first post. Just don't remember if it was 4 or 6 switch. BrianC #6 Posted August 15, 2011 (edited) It wasn't sports just regular pong. There is no "regular pong" cart for the 2600. The only official Pong on the 2600 is Video Olympics/Pong Sports (called such beacuse the Pong variants are named after sports events like Tennis (standard pong), Volleyball, Basketball, and Hockey). It wasn't a pack in, though it was a launch game. Atariage page for video olympics Edited August 15, 2011 by BrianC
Amstari #7 Posted August 15, 2011 Is it possible that they bought Pong (Video Olympics) at the same time they got the console? So they got Combat (pack-in game) and Video Olympics. Or maybe the store included the game as a special offer.
Schizophretard #8 Posted August 15, 2011 Is it possible that they bought Pong (Video Olympics) at the same time they got the console? So they got Combat (pack-in game) and Video Olympics. Or maybe the store included the game as a special offer. If they remember buying a brand new VCS with Pong the only possibility is that they bought Video Olympics with it. If they remembering buying a brand new VCS, remember not buying anything else, and remember Pong being the pack in game then the only possibility is that they confused Combat with Pong. I can see someone being confused about that. The two games that people think of when they hear the name Atari are Pong and Combat. They are different but they have enough visual and game play similarities. They are both two player and they both have a ball bouncing around the screen. Combat seems inspired by Pong,"What if we made the paddle move around the screen and instead of trying to make the other player miss the ball we try to hit them with it?" Also, some of Combat's game variations are called TANK-PONG GAMES.
0078265317 #9 Posted August 15, 2011 (edited) Yes she described the ball and 2 paddles left and right. Maybe it was combat but I never heard of that. So that could be it. Edited August 15, 2011 by 0078265317

mtshark7 #12 Posted August 15, 2011 The console was originally sold as the Atari VCS, for Video Computer System. Following the release of the Atari 5200, in 1982, the VCS was renamed "Atari 2600", after the unit's Atari part number, CX2600. The 2600 was typically bundled with two joystick controllers, a conjoined pair of paddle controllers, and a cartridge game—initially Combat[5] and later Pac-Man.[6] ^-From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_2600 Pong was never a pack in game since pong was a standalone console. Combat's Tank Pong variations aren't pong. Video Olympics/Pong Sports definitely has the ball and two paddles, though. That link I posted has screenshots. It's hosted by this site. There's a 2600 database with screenshots and manuals here too. Edited August 15, 2011 by BrianC
tz101 #14 Posted August 15, 2011 I got a Sears Video Arcade 4-switcher in 1980, and it seems like it came with some kind of target shooting game. I don't remember the exact name, but it had planes flying overhead and you had some sort of movable cannon to shoot them down with.

Trinity #17 Posted August 16, 2011 Sure your not thinking of breakout instead of pong?
Skylark68 #18 Posted August 16, 2011 Maybe they are confusing a VCS with a dedicated Pong system.
