THE OFFICIAL ATARI 2600 HEAVY 6-SWITCH LIST

mtshark7

Recommended Posts

The VCS heavy sixer had been my dream console. The first 2600 I ever played was my uncle's 4-switch Vader in the early 80s and I finally got a light sixer of my very own a few years ago which was pretty nice, but this is the model that I've always wanted. I'm so happy to finally own one, and everything on it works like new.

NTSC/PAL/Sears/Special: NTSC
Serial # (Ex: #54035V or #007649): 43519N
MFG Location (Sunnyvale, Taiwan): Sunnyvale
(Owner/AA Member), Banquo
(Location= City, State, Country): Kentucky, USA
A/B Channel Slot (Yes/No): Yes
A/B Channel Switch (Yes/No): No
Functional (Yes/No): Yes

Previous Owner: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only thing that made me really sad was when I got it home and discovered that heavy sixers will not fit properly in the 2600 travel case.

A cool story, went to my local gaming store today because they had just moved to a new, larger location in town. They must have brought out some older stock, because I saw this inside of a locked glass case. When I asked about it, I was told that it was a broken display unit, but if I wanted a 2600 they had a few working ones behind the counter (which were all 4 switch 2600A's). So I asked them if they would consider selling this display unit, and if so how much. They told me $9.99! Plus everything in store was 15% off for the holiday. It was dusty as heck, but after a good cleaning, it's nice, definitely looks older than any heavy sixer I've come across in the wild. Kind of strange the double manufacture sticker (which is white paper, not metallic), but I'm not about to try to peel the top one off to see what's underneath. Works fine though, just the 'game select' and 'game reset' switch springs have given out, so they have to be manually pushed back up (which is probably why they thought the console was broken).

This is one has the A/B Channel slot in the case but does not have a channel switch inside on the board.  From all the build dates this seems right.  Not sure if this is from factory or possible repair.  Bought this one off eBay so there is no past data.

Bought a Sears Heavy on a whim this past Saturday and here's what I've got:

NTSC/PAL/Sears/Special: Sears

Serial #: 81169T

MFG Location (Sunnyvale, Taiwan): Sunnyvale

(Owner/AA Member), (Location= City, State, Country): ApolloBoy; Campbell, CA, USA

A/B Channel Slot (Yes/No): No

A/B Channel Switch (Yes/No): No

Functional (Yes/No): Unknown, I just got through cleaning it up and am waiting on the switchboard to dry out (it was super filthy inside so I gave it a wash!)

Notes: Has the "STOP - DO NOT ATTEMPT GAME REPAIR" sticker, all the chips have mid-1977 datecodes, purchased from eBay seller meleeislandretro on 2/15/2020

Here’s an update to my last post, I just got through testing it and it works perfectly! The switches do need a really good cleaning and it could use some new caps, but it’s performed quite well and it’s also the first six-switch system where I didn’t need to mash in those Atari Corp. carts. Here’s a pic of the serial along with one of it in action and a couple of beauty shots...

I found this heavy sixer cx-2600 on Ebay.  The unit is in immaculate condition, seller kept it boxed in a closet since 1980.  The interesting thing is that the seller had grown up less than 2 miles from me, so even though I lost my original unit back in the early 80s, this one is the closest I can get to replacing it.

If I'm reading the list properly, mine appears to be the earliest on here? Is there an explanation of the manufacturing order/dates?

Here is mine, I recently found it on an internet store.

NTSC/PAL/Sears/Special: NTSC
Serial # (Ex: #54035V or #007649): 71799F
MFG Location (Sunnyvale, Taiwan):    Sunnyvale, CA
(Owner/AA Member), avenger75
(Location= City, State, Country): Paris, France
A/B Channel Slot (Yes/No): No
A/B Channel Switch (Yes/No): No
Functional (Yes/No): Yes

I purchased it in game store on internet. and modified it with composite mod.

My first VCS was a Vader, I won it as it was one of the  price of a TV program contest in  the early eighties.

The Vader was a SECAM unit, and I can now appreciate the color of a NTSC heavy sixer.

Here’s mine - sorry for bad pics.  I am the original owner of this unit, purchased for me and my siblings by our parents in 1977.  I am in possession of a lot of original pieces / documentation, etc.  Some of you may have seen my FB posts.  I am still trying to locate my trove of games of which I’m fairly certain (not 100%) I have at least one rare game.  Could be wrong but need to locate to be sure.  I’m also the original owner of an Atari 400 computer I purchased new around 1979 or 1980.
