Atari games that are like Star Castle.

Recommended Posts

Aside from the obvious YAR'S REVENGE, "Star Wars Death Star Battle" also reminds me a LOT of Star Castle. I just discovered this game recently, and it's quickly become one of my favorite games - love it!

Any other 2600 games remind you of Star Castle?

It's a great game! I found some "reviews" online slagging it. If there's one thing I've learned about Atari games is that you can't trust reviews, you've got to play the game yourself to decide if you like it or not.

I'm not in any way, shape, or form a Star Wars fan, and never have been, so I don't gravitate towards the Star Wars franchise, but this is one seriously GREAT GAME!

HAHA - I never watched Star Wars in its entirety. I thought it was boring as hell...

I'd sure like to know what reviewers bashed this game. The game play has more depth than a lot others released for the VCS.

I started playing it about a week or so ago (whenever I posted that score & comment in the link above) and was blown away. To me it's like a mix of Star Castle and Sinistar. The Sinistar aspect being the Death Star being built.

A great game and I'm glad I discovered it...just one of those deals where you get a cart, throw it in the tub and never play it.

One game that reminds me of Star Castle is Sinistar. In fact, Rob - I just sold you that game on cart.

What do you think of it? Totally not my kind of game at all and the 2600 version, with its constant firing, was a little different to say the least...

Here's the link:

They gave the game a "D" rating, calling it an "instantly unforgettable shooter, that it is "star wars meets breakout", and a "shallow experience, lacking any sense of strategy or fun".

Yars revenge is a better game than StarCastle TM. Timing the Zorlon Cannon to shoot at the right time takes skill.

I still haven't killed Sinistar. Maybe it's supposed to be like that if the game wasn't finished.

I was surprised how good it was for a VCS game. The sound of Sinistar being completely built cracks me up. :)

Watch my Star Castle game play video here. You can fast forward to when I get around 15K points and watch it until the end and let me know if you still think Yars' Revenge is more difficult.

There are very few classic arcade gamers that can score beyond 20K on Star Castle. My high is 27K and had I recorded it that score would rank #3 on the TG scoreboard 2,600 points behind the world record. But, submitting scores to TG doesn't interest me anymore.

Hmmmm. It would seem if someone did the "unlimited ships" trick, they could score far beyond 27K ? Or does TG not allow that??

I'm not aware of an unlimited ships trick. I'm going to guess that's on the "easy chip" version of Star Castle as you'll see scores from BITD of like 7,000,000.

Even it was on the "hard chip" it wouldn't be allowed.

How would you rate Star Castle on the vectrex (difficulty wise) to the original?

First, are you talking about Sinistar which has a bug that gives you 255 lives? I think it happens when you blow up Sinistar and get swallowed up at the same time.

Star Castle on the Vectrex is easier. In percentage terms, I'd say the difficulty is around 85% of the arcade version.

I think it might be Sinistar I'm thinking of. Something like when you are on your last life, and you somehow get killed twice and wind up with a negative number of ships?

Thanks for the info on Star Castle!

I just want to quietly say this: there is a poll over on the Classic Gaming forum pitting the NES against the Atari. They were neck and neck for a while, but NES has just smoked past Atari. Please go over there and vote if you want to support Atari in this poll.

My arcade Star Castle video. Over 17k... pretty close to my best.

Note the high score on the game. This was at a competition, and one of the best at Star Castle was at the event.

In Star Castle, the bullets wrap around the screen. So, instead of waiting for the sparks to come after you, turn around and fire some shots off before moving your ship to the other side.

See my video for example.
