Flashback

Recommended Posts

Hey so earlier today I was at the swap meet and found a guy who had a Jaguar and a couple of games he was selling, Cannon Fodder, Missile Command 3D and Super Burnout. He wanted $20 apiece and seeing as they were all sealed I bought 2 of them(Cannon Fodder and Missile Command) since thats all I had the money for. Anyway when I bought them he mentioned some of the other games he'd had and sold, one of which I'd never heard of called Flashback, he loved it apparently. So anyway I get home and look it up and the game play looks interesting. So to anyone who has a copy how is it? Is it worth checking out if I find one for sale?

Flashback is an awesome game. It also appeared on Genesis, SNES, PC, and Mac,

I'm going to definately have to check this out, my brother in law was just over and noticed I had a window up about the game and he went on and on about how much he loved it on his genesis. Now the trick will be finding a copy in my price range thats CIB, everything else I have on my Jag is CIB including the console itself so why break from that. :P

Now that I have Super Burnout and Protector SE, flashback is next on my want lost. It looks to be similar to Out of this World from what I can gather but I've never played it myself.

Also Cannon Fodder is great fun. Good pick up.

Any idea what I can expect to pay for Flashback if I find a CIB copy? There is one atm for $40(to much money for me atm since I'm ordering the parts for a new PC next week) on ebay is that about what they go for or is that just a typical ebay inflated price?

:edit:

Also glad to hear Cannon Fodder is a good game. Been wanting to try it out after watching tons of videos and reading reviews. Can't wait to try it a little later tonight. :D

That is partly because Out of this World and Flashback were both created by Delphine Software. The graphics and audio have similarities, but the presentation and controls in Flashback are more refined than Out of this World. The storylines of the two games are completely unrelated.

Very glad to hear that about the controls.

I don't think I've seen it up on sale here @ AA too often but on eBay it's been going for upwards of $20 loose. The Jay Smith guide (which may be a little out dated) has it @ $17 CIB. I wish there were more completed sales on eBay for this game so I could see any kind of trend. Ive seen the one you talked about @ $40 for awhile and no one has yet to bite on it.

Yeah, quite a few People get confused and think that flashback was a sequel to another world due to the similarities between them, They also do not know that flashback has a proper sequel called Fade to Black (wich I thought is a great game) buts in 3rd person rather then a side scroller. But yeah flashback is a awesome game. i have it for SNES.

Flashback is a great game if you really spend the time with it. I personally feel there are better versions on other platforms (3DO, Sega CD), but if you don't have access to those the Jag version is still a great game. It just has some slowdown and stuff that's ironed out in a few of the other versions.

It's tempting for me to get it on Sega Cd. It seems to be easier to acquire and cheaper. But I know even if I get it on Sega Cd I will still be looking for it on the Jag. Case in point, me still looking for Pitfall on the Jag when I already have it for the Genesis.

I'll save money in the long run if I just wait for a Jag copy. The jag just owns my soul..... :(

So would it be safe to assume all platform games on the Jag are way better than the Genesis/SNES versions?

It depends on your classification of "better". For instance, games like Flashback and Pitfall both have slowdown and framerate issues that some of the other ones do not have (for instance, both games on the Genesis have no slowdown or framerate issues). The Jag versions however have some enhancements. Pitfall has more colorful visuals and it has a save function (the only version to do so, I believe). Flashback has a few other background details not in the other versions as well. Personally, I prefer a smoother gameplay experience, but some prefer the visual enhancements.

Flashback is a great game. I have the Genesis version and don't really see much difference between the two. Game is damn hard though, but it has a great developed story to it.

Flashback is very linear, I needed a walkthru.

Also I heard Cannon Fodder is buggy as hell.

But dont let me deter you from getting/playing them.

Yes Flashback in my opinon is a dam nice game!It has a pretty good storyline going for it and it is very challenging i payed around $12 bucks for mine here in the marketplace of these forums.Post a want for it in the market place section im sure someone will sell one for around $20 or cheaper in my opinon $40 bucks is a little to steep for the game.

Did just that earlier today. :P Might take a while though as I'd really really really prefer it be CIB, everything else I own for the Jag is so why break from that? lol I love having the jaguar boxes lined up on my shelf with the rest of my collection. :)

I love Flashback. I have it for my Genesis emulator. Not sure if this works on other game emulators (like for the Jaguar, or SNES or other systems) but a certain trick works on the Genesis emulators of the game where you can walk through walls! In some cases this can be very benificial, in others you just fall to your death.

Flackback is definitely a favorite of mine, and I've played it on a lot of different consoles. The Jaguar version is pretty middle of the pack. If you don't have a copy of it for something else, go ahead and pick it up. The worst one I've played is the SNES one. Too much slowdown. Very stuttery. The best version is definitely the Sega CD one. The redone CGI cutscenes really aren't any better than the original ones, but the in level music is a great addition.

I loved Flashback. Very fluid animation, responsive control, challenging, but not impossible, all around great game.

I still prefer Out of this World/Another World, though.

The way I tend to look at it is Flashback is more of like a mission-oriented Prince of Persia. The way you hang on to ledges is the same, you can step slowly or run (although performing the functions are reversed), the environments and platforms are completely flat, etc etc. Out of This World has far more of its "own" feel in comparison and the physics and environments control and act far different.

As far as the games seeming similar because they were made by the same company, I think it's more due to the rotoscoped animation sequences in both. Asides from that, each shares little in common with one-another. Completely different teams worked on each game and IIRC, only one guy worked on the original version of Out of This World. Delphine only published it. I think he still owns the rights to the game today and has since released an updated version on more modern platforms.

Slightly related, isn't Blackthorne on 32X another game like this one?

I have heard it's similar, but I have also been told Blackthorne is a lot more action-oriented.
