SMS R-Type Credits?

I played R-Type on my Game Gear back in the mid-90's. Never really had time to play it all the way through.

 

I've restarted playing in the last couple weeks, but I have been unable to get through level 4. :( At the beginning it says it has 3 credits. Is there a way to "insert" more credits so I can play longer?
