Are These Actually Rare?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Got a coupler diskettes for the Atari computer that are listed as 'rare' on atarimania.com ;

The first is "Andromeda", just the diskette. No case or manual. Here's what atarimania says: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-andromeda_268.html

The second is "Encounter at Questar IV", again just the diskette. Here's the atarimania page: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-encounter-at-questar-iv_1838.html

They both seem rare, but it's a bully of a time trying to find out exactly what they would be worth, if anything at all.

Some clarification would be nice.

Thanks!

I don't know. Personally I think it's trickier to gauge rarity from disk software than it is with carts. Disk-based stuff was dime a dozen whereas there is a known list of carts and people in the know can often tell you the history of a cart title. I have a rarity 9 product but that's primarily because it was mail order only from the publishers and, beyond a few ads in the Atari press, it was never properly marketed - never even saw a review. I remember once writing a letter to the developer asking a question and got one back. All I remember is that he had a Polish-sounding surname.

A lot seems to depend on two factors with disk software - how it was sold and when during the life of the publisher it was published. What I will say is that rare disk-based software doesn't sell for as much as rare cart-based software ... usually.

What is the name of the program?

Correct. Unless the titles are unbelievably rare and never show up on eBay, you probably won't get much for loose disks. Boxed, that's another story...
