Why are Apple II users "different"?

dudeslife

Recommended Posts

For most retro system users (atari, commodore, tandy), there is a sharing of resources (books, magazines, etc) with others of the same interests. And then there are the Apple II users who seem to want to hoard their books and magazines and try to command ridiculous prices on Ebay for them. There are no Incider pdf caches or Apple II book pdf collections like we have for C64/128 and Atari computers. Sure you can find a few pdfs here and there but nowhere near the amount of the other retro systems. Why are the Apple II users different?

The Asimov FTP site was one of the earliest and best resources for software for any system.

Apple II users lead the way there, and it's still a great resource...

That said, a lot of Apple merchandise is rather spendy on e-bay... Supply and demand, I'd say..

There are no ..... Apple II book pdf collections like we have for C64/128 and Atari computers.

As for books:

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=apple+ii+books+pdf

That turns up some decent books..

I stopped counting after 50 or so PDFs among the listed sites..

There are no Incider pdf caches

True, those damn selfish pigs!!!

I am speaking mainly of magazines and books (Compute's, BASIC programming, etc). Every disk image in Apple history is pretty easy to find.

and that pdf search yields nothing.. most of those sites have the same small selection of scans (mostly the manuals that came with the system) or worse, jpg images of the cover of the book they are so proud to own but not scan and preserve. the dude here with the Scribd account offers a better selection than those sites.. apple2history.org offers a whopping 3 books.

Manuals

I edited my post but I guess you missed it. Yeah, those manuals are everywhere.. that's not what I am talking about. I dont really want a SCSI card owners manual.. I am talking about the numerous third party published books and magazines that I can find 500 of for c64 or atari... you know, Computes 2nd book of Apple, 3rd book of Apple, Sams Apple IIe Programming Reference, etc.

You know that a lot of those in the list are 3rd party????

And a lot of the manuals on Commodore and other sites are also non-3rd party manuals...

Oh well...

True, there isn't something that makes it that easy for you..

You would have to search a bit..

I agree with that..

And I was giving you information. You refused to use the search.

When I did it for you, you didn't read the list.

When I pointed it out, you ignored it..

How do we know if it's useless if you don't tell us what you are looking for???

You asked for some.

I gave you some.

You are upset because you don't want "those", but how do we know?

Or should we just keep searching for you until we find what you won't tell us you are looking for??

If YOU answered someone's very generic request, and they said "that's not specifically what I wanted," would that sound douchey?

:-)

Also, this site has a good selection:

http://www.apple2online.com/index.php?p=1_33_Games-Library

..has some game manual PDFs in it...

http://www.apple2online.com/index.php?p=1_2_Documentation-Library

Various documentation (Careful, some of it is hardware...)

Damnit.. You wanted the 2nd book of Apple, not the first..

Great.. I'll probably get slammed for missing that.. Sorry..

Sorry if I didn't find this sooner for you.. ;-)

(Judging by tonight's experience, I might find a few pages of Indexes and some ads. :-)

I haven't found many third-party magazines online. I would love to go back and read through more.

I met Ken from Apple2Online a few months back, and I enjoyed talking with him for over an hour. IIRC, he agreed there was a shortage of Apple II magazines, and wondered why more Apple users hadn't made the material available. He did his part with the Apple IIgs Buyer's Guide :)

Yeah, the magazines are sparse..

I did find some 15 page excerpts from Incider on asimov, but decided not to post the link this time.. ;-)

(I rarely make the same mistake twice.. I am great at making all new mistakes tho.. ;-) )

Interesting, as one would assume Apple users frequently became Mac users who loved DTP and scanners.

Although, maybe they loved it so much that they still vigorously respect copyrights.. ;-)

I'll keep browsing, but it's looking really dead for the magazines..

Micro supported the Apple and has a torrent.

Compute had a lot of Apple stuff and has a torrent.

Softside supported the Apple and has a torrent.

The nibble archive can be purchased but scans are B&W and I've heard complaints about the quality.

C.A.L.L. Apple used to be downloadable but I'm not sure if it still can be.

Apple Assembly Line used to be downloadable.

A+, Incider, SoftTalk... missing in action.
