Authorize All Games for MAME

Recommended Posts

I got my cabinet built and my joystick ready to go. I'm using my laptop for now until my computer for the cabinet arrives.

But, the thing is that using MAME of course, you have to type in OK or move the joystick left and right to authorize the game on first boot up. Since the computer recognizes the X-Arcade as a keyboard, there is no way to do this. It doesn't detect the joystick as one, it detects it as a number pad.

My question is this since obviously I don't have to time to manually authorize every single game:

Is there a way to authorize all the games at once or use the X-Arcade to type in the ok or left then right before the start of the game? I don't want to have to remove the computer every single time I wish to play something I haven't played before.....

I just found something out. I'm using Maximus Arcade. All I'd have to do, at least in that, is to exit the game and start it again.

I haven't kept us with MAME in years but when I was using it a couple things were true:

1) You only need to authorize the game the first time you play it. It remembers after that.

2) If you're using a control stick, moving the stick left and right registers as "OK" so no need to pull out the keyboard.

For #1. That part I do know.

For #2. The tricky part about the X-Arcade is that it's registered as a keyboard and not a joystick. If I had a game pad in there, the left and right would work for that. With the X-Arcade, left and right are number pad 4 and 6 and not the arrow keys. I wish that problem will be fixed in future revisions, but I still love the damn thing nonetheless....

How plausible would it be to set up a custom keyboard mapping in Windows that sees those keypresses as O and K, and set up MAME to use O as Left and K as Right?

With Joy2Key, its really simple. :)

Isn't that just for joystick devices? What's it going to do for his joystick that appears as a keyboard to Windows?

Ahh I didn't read that its already being recognized as a keyboard for Windows. I am not entirely sure then... but check under the MAME Default options. There should be options to turn off all warnings.

You can turn off some things, but not those warnings I believe.

Disabling all the warning message stuff can be done if you modify the MAME source and build your own executables, I've been doing that for years with my cab. Compiled binaries of this type are not distributed as doing so would violate some of the MAME terms.

Anyone interested can search for the 'no nag' diffs and MameCompiler for an easier route than starting from scratch.

I have the X-Arcade Tankstick. The Left-Right-Left with the LEFT joystick works fine. Always has.
