trent #1 Posted September 24, 2011 My nieces and nephews love playing the Atari but they keep breaking the white plastic inserts. What is the best source for replacement inserts? Atari2600.com has them for $17 a pair, but I can find used complete joysticks for less than that.

jferio #3 Posted September 24, 2011 You might check eBay for sellers with the refurbishment kits. Otherwise, my recommendation would be to find 3rd party joysticks like the Wico Command and Control. I gave up long ago on the CX-40 joysticks. They're delicate and fragile, and thus I've had a hard time finding used joysticks at thrifts and stores that didn't have some sort of breakage already. +GroovyBee #4 Posted September 24, 2011 You could look into getting the Euro D-pads or get Ax to do you some NES converted pads (if he is still doing them).
Atarian7 #5 Posted September 24, 2011 Click on the link subfunction put in his post and you will find that bestelectronics has them for $3.95 each.
SlowCoder #6 Posted September 24, 2011 I wouldn't say the CX40 is fragile, but it's not heavy duty either. If your kids KEEP breaking them, then I doubt any other joystick will last much longer, and I think it's time you teach them how to properly use them. Some people just get too rough when playing, torquing the sticks too far.
trent #7 Posted September 24, 2011 Thanks for the link. I had seen that but I'm a bit put off by Best's order process. Guess I will give them a try. Only one has been broken so far but it only took a couple of hours. That combined with my childhood memories of constantly broken inserts is why I want to have some extras on hand :-)
fiddlepaddle #8 Posted September 25, 2011 I'd suggest that you may need a heavier duty joystick. If I kept breaking them, I'd probably build a heavy duty joystick, or adapt a genuine arcade joystick.
