OldSchoolRetroGamer #1 Posted September 29, 2011 (edited) I have touched on this subject before in various forms but I want to focus this one specifically on the ATARI Fans. You can choose to own 1 ATARI console & 1 ATARI computer only for the rest of your life! Now, WHAT WILL IT BE? I am sure the answers will be easy for some, I am interested to see what combo is chosen..... I have also posted this as an OPEN TAG video on Youtube for those interested: Edited September 29, 2011 by OldSchoolRetroGamer

BydoEmpire #10 Posted September 29, 2011 XEGS and high-end ST of some sort. XEGS - the best 8-bit software. ST because I only owned one a short time, but there are a lot of great 16-bit computer games I could spend a lot of time with. As a computer there's a lot more software I could use today on the ST than A8s. I'm not super familiar with all the ST variants, but I'd lean towards one w/ a hard drive and faster processor to make computing more usable, even if it means some games aren't compatible. I'd have to research which model best suits my needs. Tempted to go 7800 for 2600 compatibility plus extras, but the A8 software is such high quality - the arcade ports are as good or better, plus all the computer titles. Plus I can add a disk drive and get more games.

Cebus Capucinis #13 Posted September 29, 2011 5200 + 800. I want to play a really exciting Atari 800 game, then assume it's completely different on the 5200, plug it in, and then get incredibly disappointed. Joking aside, the 7800 plus the 800XL with upgraded memory.

Reaperman #16 Posted September 29, 2011 I'll third the 800XL/7800 combo I'm not a huge fan of Atari's consoles, but 7800 seems to do some nice stuff that my 800xl won't, and it's backwards compatibility is as big a selling point now as ever. As for why 800XL--that's a tougher question, and my answer has it mostly coming down to looks.

potatohead #18 Posted September 29, 2011 Well, if I go with what I have, it means ditch the 7800, keep the VCS, ditch the Jag, keep the 800 XL. If I could pick anything, I would probably still keep the VCS, just because it's the core of all the great memories and experiences, and keep a nice XE. 16 bit gaming doesn't have the appeal 8 bit gaming does. I moved to the PC, and really enjoy the best of the DOS years, rather than the competing 16 bit computers. (the PC move was more or less forced, or I would have been jamming on a ST / Amiga machine for sure) Ended up in PC / UNIX land... Sun, SGI, etc..
TheGameCollector #19 Posted September 29, 2011 I'd go with the 7800 because it also plays the 2600 games. 2-in-1 is awesome. Then whatever the best Atari 8-bit computer is. Is it 800XL? I have an XEGS currently for the computer games.

bigbee99 #22 Posted September 30, 2011 For the console I have to pick the 7800. For computers, I'll pass on all the Atari's for a C64. B
famicommander #23 Posted September 30, 2011 Atari 7800 is the clear choice for home console. It plays 7800 and 2600 games. I have not gotten into the 80s home computers yet, mostly because I currently lack the space. But I'd go with an 800XL. And as soon as I have the space I am going to hunt down some Commodore, Amiga, Atari, Apple, and MSX 80s computers.
