carmel_andrews #1 Posted October 7, 2011 Thanks to our atari friends in eastern europe link only http://www.atari.sk/?str=news2006 look for 'Project M - Wolfenstein 3D for Atari XL/XE' news item If the screenshot is anything to go by, it looks like it will be a good port If wolfenstein 3d is possible on the A8, i guess that doom is only around the corner (even if it uses more sprites) Interesting that someone also has done a major update to Bewesofts 'superpacker' and combined it with other popular A8 packers and ported it to windblows (so i guess you can use it with atari xex/exe/com emulator executables) look for 'Super Packer 3.1' news item

Asaki #5 Posted October 7, 2011 If wolfenstein 3d is possible on the A8, i guess that doom is only around the corner (even if it uses more sprites) Technically DOOM has a lot more going for it than just "more sprites" The level geometry is MUCH more complex. You can fake the more complex geometry with a bunch of spites.
Chilly Willy #7 Posted October 9, 2011 The main difference is the raycasting - Wolf3D casts rays in a fixed 64x64 grid where everything is a set height. Doom casts rays in a BSP tree that has coords that can range from 0 to 65535, and there are heights for the floor and ceiling. You can't "fake" it with a bunch of sprites, but you could simplify things enough to run on the A8. It would be slower than Project M, but look fairly similar. The main thing would be in cutting back the level size to something manageable. I could also see this requiring a LOT of ram.
kogden #8 Posted October 10, 2011 I'd rather see a Project-M with actual things to shoot at before more features to slow the engine down get introduced. It's pretty zippy with empty halls but we haven't seen what it's like with actual Nazis to shoot at. I am really impressed with the Project-M framerates considering the amount of on-screen colors, etc. I know I couldn't pull it off. --Kevin
bpj1138 #9 Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) Speaking of Wolf and DOOM and about being from the past.. I realize this might set me up for ridicule, but I recently got a computer fast enough to play DOOM3.. (Call me crazy, but I don't like buying new gadgets, even when it comes to computers). For the longest time I didn't have a cell phone. It was getting a bit ridiculous, since I was writing J2ME apps at the time (remember those?)... Of course not, because you have the.... I-Hate-Your-Guts-Phone.. or possibly you're an android from the future.. ANYHOW, so, I'm playing DOOM3, and I'm waiting to kill something, and it's getting a little boring.. then I realize.. you know, I could boot DOOM, and I'd be having fun killing something within seconds.. Finally after a bunch of walking around and "talking" to "people", I finally got to shoot my gun, but it was all realistic and detailed. It was so realistic, it sucked. Oh well.. "time to kill another one".. Edited October 10, 2011 by bpj1138
kogden #10 Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) Never dealt with J2ME.... was a NewtonOS user, a Palm user briefly until I realized it was no Newton then I ran WinCE. Went through 3 PalmOS smartphones and a WinCE phone for a while. Realized that PalmOS and WinCE were jokes and switched to a Linux-based iPaq and bluetooth dumbphone. Now I have a cheap Android phone. I've coded for all 3 platforms to some degree. We weren't all asleep during the mobile revolution. Some of us actually paid $500-$1000 for these devices before rap stars and Apple made everyone think they need one and they've been around almost as long as the digital cellphone. As far as Doom 3 goes, I'll agree, gameplay sucked...graphics were pretty. More of a simulator guy myself. Only modern game I really play much on my PC is the IL2-Sturmovik series. Then I get to shoot nazis with really BIG guns at 300+ mph. Haven't found a fun flight sim for the A8 yet. FS2 is painful on the 8-bit, ST version was awesome. Spitfire 40 and Bismarck were fun but I hesitate to call them sims. --Kevin Edited October 10, 2011 by kogden

snicklin #14 Posted October 22, 2011 but I recently got a computer fast enough to play DOOM3.. (Call me crazy, but I don't like buying new gadgets, even when it comes to computers). I think along the same lines. In my case, I'm quite tight with money (so that I have more money for things that really need buying). The way I see it is that I can pay £70 for a new PS3 game right now, or I can wait 5-10 years and the game will be £0.50p. I can live my life but with a time offset, it's a lot cheaper! If it was some of the games and gaming industry on the past you could wait something like 20 or 30 years (in the best...) and play it on A8
