Good (relatively)cheap games for the TG16?

Recommended Posts

Before I got rid of my TG16, I really enjoyed Aeroblasters. It's a lot more fun with 2 people though. The slow plunge of your jet when it gets destroyed is hilariously awesome in my opinion.

Bonk's Revenge was pretty fun and you already have Legendary Axe (the whole reason in owning a TG16 in my opinion).

Aeroblasters looks awesome! I'll definitely check that one out, just added it to my want list. I've got a nice little list going. :) Thinking of possibly selling some stuff to give me some more spending money, haven't decided for sure yet but my Saturn may be on the chopping block.

I did pretty much the same thing. I got rid of my NES, TG16, and a few other systems to concentrate on my Odyssey 2, Intellivision, and 2600 collection. I decided I needed to focus on a smaller collection. If you don't already have one, I suggest picking up the Turbobooster or Turbobooster Plus for your machine. It really makes the audio a lot better. I think it was supposed to sharpen the graphics a bit too, but I didn't notice any difference.

I'm actually bidding on one on ebay right now. If I don't win though no biggie as I'm actually at the momment working on saving towards being able to buy a region modded PC Engine Duo-R. :)

I wouldn't spend the money on a regular booster. All it does is convert the video output from RF to composite. You can accomplish the same thing by either modifying a cable (easy), or modifying the console itself (slightly harder but still easy) for a whole lot less money. In fact, I have a extra cable that I made before I did the AV mod on mine. I'll sell it to you for $8.00 shipped if you want it. Send me a pm.

Just purchased Bloody Wolf, Dungeon Explorer, Double Dungeons and The Legendary Axe II + another new boxed TurboPad from a user over on pcenginefx for $40. :)

^ Definitely. I don't know what it costs so I didn't recommend it, but it captures all of the Bubble Bobble fun that Rainbow Islands managed to miss.

Parasol Stars tends to be on the pricey side.

In addition to the many fun games that everyone else has suggested, I'd recommend Battle Royale and Klax. Battle Royale is a simple wrestling game, but it's pretty wild when you can play it with four other people. I've always liked Klax and the TG-16 version looks good and plays great. If you like puzzlers, you should pick it up.

I'm curious about this cable you made, How does it work? I may be interested in buyin' it!

I picked up Parasol Stars a while back. It's probably the funnest game I've played on TG16

I actually REALLY want this game but am just having a little trouble pulling the trigger on it since its pricer then I'm used to older games being. :P

I didn't realize that there was much demand for these cables. The cable connects to the expansion port on the back. It's basically a booster without the shell. I can always make more if more people want them. Send me a PM.

racing: um... none?

Moto Roader!

fun racing game in the style of a RC Pro Am or Micro Machines… and also great with 5 players!

and I paid $59.99 for Splatterhouse… but then that was in 1990! Turbo Grafx games were quite expensive for some titles back then...

So my copy of Blazing Lazers arrived to day and wow is it fun! Definitely up there with the best shooters I've played, I managed to get through the first 2 levels and part of the 3rd on my first go, difficulty feels just perfect, its not easy but its also not bash your head into the wall hard.

Yeah, I remembered Moto Roader. I rented it ''back in the day.'' I didn't like that if a car fell behind and hit the side of the screen, it would be shot forward. It actually made catching back up a little harder because you often were facing the wrong way and just kept bouncing. Also, I never liked Splatterhouse. (ducking while things are being thrown at me) It always just seemed boring. Too straight forward and linear. I always felt it was only popular because it was gory. (I feel the same way about some songs in that I think they are crap songs that are only popular because they have some ''dirty'' word in it.) But that's just me. If you like it, go for it.

There are a couple of tricks in Blazing Lazers, too. On the first stage, with the big space ship that breaks into three parts and moves around, if you can just dodge the shots and ship parts and let it go through its entire dance, the three pieces will fly off the screen and you'll get a big bonus and stuff. Also, and this is one that I found, on the stage that looks like you're inside of some monster intestine or something (the one with all the brains flying at you) there is a mid point boss that is just a bunch of eyes that come after you. If you have weapon IV to full power (with the four orbs circling you, not necessarily the "full power" power up), you can just sit at the bottom of the screen and let them come at you and destroy themselves on the orbs. You can sit there as long as you like and let them kill themselves on your orb shield racking up points and extra lives. I used to do this, then go to school, come back and have a crap load of lives with which to play the rest of the game. (Although, you have to be careful and watch it for a bit, sometimes an eye can slip through. I found it best to be just to one side of center at the bottom of the screen.) There's also a level select and music player that can be accessed via a controller input code at the title screen IIRC, but I don't remember the code.

My personal favorite weapon on Blazing Lazers was the blue lasers powered up to the third level so you have one that shoots straight ahead, and two that squiggle on either side.

I'll give those a try. :) And that is my favorite weapon as well, especially coupled with multi bodies, really messes up the enemy with that combo.

I put some time into Blazing Lazers this morning and I think it was area 7 but it completely kicked my butt. I'm still trying to figure out the weapons system. I kind of got the numbers down and what they do but the purple orbs? Sometimes they do something other times they don't and it seems when they do do something it's diffent than what they did before.

I haven't even figured out what the purple obs do at all. I just assumed they were bonus points or something. There is always so much going on on screen its hard to keep track off whats happening. I wish the weaspons were represented by icons similar to their appearance, I'm having trouble remembering which numbers represent what.

Hmmm maybe they don't do anything? Like you said, there's so much stuff going on it's hard to tell what's doing what.

The purple orbs are another way to power up your weapon, but it takes more than one per level. Like, say if you get the III weapon orb and get a blue laser. You can either power up to the second level of the laser by getting another orb with a III on it, or get the purple orbs. According to the manual:

"When an enemy is destroyed, a purple ball may appear. By collecting the following number of power-up balls, you can increase your Star Fighter's weapon level accordingly.

Level 0 to level 1 - 1 ball.

Level 1 to level 2 - 2 balls

Level 2 to level 3 - 4 balls

Level 3 to level 4 - 8 balls

Level 4 to level 5 - 12 balls

Level 5 to level 6 - 16 balls"

So the times when it seems like it didn't do anything, it's like it was probably just the third ball into level three or something and you need more to increase the level again. It'd be nice if there were some kind of meter that showed you how far you had to go to get to the next level or something, but there's not. And of course, as mentioned, just getting an orb with the same roman numeral on it as the weapon you are currently using will automatically bump you up to the next level, but I'm not sure how this affects the count on the power up orbs.

Thanks for the info. Not trying to turn this not a Blazing Lazers thread but I tried that strategy of getting a bunch of extra on that level that looks like your in a body. I noticed that I wasn't getting any points by destroying the green orbs that the thing shot out and just assumed that extra lives depended on score so I stopped and just killed the thing. Am I missing something with this strategy?

Thanks again for the info in the purple orbs.

It wasn't green orbs. There's one mid point boss that is just like eight eyeballs (four on either side of the screen) that open and close and spit homing eyeballs at you. It's at about the 19 min mark in this video.

Ahhh gotcha. I know exactly where that is. I made it past Area 7 and into Area 9 which I am guessing is the last area. I am guessing because I don't know as Area 9 is brutal and took all of my lives and continues

Blazing Lazers is one of the best shooters of all time :D

Love Legendary Axe. I also had a way to farm extra lives to help later in the game in this one. lol... In the video at about 6:20, there's an area in zone 3a where you get an extra man. I used to get all those gems for extra points, get the extra man, back track some, then fall off a ledge. When I respawned, all the statues were back allowing me to get the points and extra man again. Rinse, repeat. It's a little tedious and can take a while to get the extra lives from points, but hey, it works. (I also had a theory which I could never quite prove... the statues glow red, then blue, then red again... I always thought that the size of the gem depended on the color that the statue was glowing when you hit it. If you look closely, it looks like he gets the two big gems when the statue is at about the same brightness... Same with the health orbs when its red... or something like that...)
