Sorry if this has already been posted, Prototypes of A8 hardware

Recommended Posts

Following on from a similar thread on the 2600 section here some time back when someone posted up a piccy of one of the original proto's of the VCS/2600 and then someone else (within the same thread) posted up another pic of them standing next to a museum exhibit of a v. similar looking vcs/2600 proto (even if the museum got the caption wrong, it should have read ATARI INC, not ATARI CORP)

I was wondering if there exists or existed (in the PD at least) some pics of Prototype A8 hardware, like the 400/800 or 810 etc and similar for the ST (and related tech like TT/falcon etc)

Perhaps a certain person (and i don't mean Al) here has them in his archives and perhaps can share then with the rest of the Atari community on AA

I took some pictures (with my phone, so quality is low) of some of the prototypes at CGE2010 in Vegas when I was there...

Next time I suggest cleaning your lens before taking photos, that makes quite a difference, especially on a phone camera ;-)

You specifically asked about prototype a8 hardware, you also mentioned a specific person and his archives... He already has a large number of prototype hardware on his website... But as you so kindly linked me to the thread you were talking about, I'll return the favor

If you're looking for big, hand-wired 800's and such, I don't think anything of the sort has ever been found or posted anywhere. It would be interesting to ask the engineers what existed in the early days.

Given the physical and modular architecture of the 800, they could have had a proto motherboard made that was very near to the production version, at least functionally (it might well have been half the size of a kitchen table) - implementing various machine configurations would have been just a case of remaking CPU, OS, memory slot devices.
