How to use Atari SLM605 Laser Printer

Recommended Posts

I have a used Atari SLM 605 Laser Printer being shipped to me. Used but worked last years ago before being packed away. Crap shoot if it works when I get it but it did power up for seller. If not, I purchased at a low price so I guess can have for parts if I find another one.

Until then, I own a TT030 with 8MB ST Ram and 2MB TT Ram. Will this drive the printer? Any special software I need to make it work?

I own Calamus 1.09 and PageStream 2.0.

Do I need special drivers to make it work?

NVDI should have the drivers. If I am not mistaken those printers go to the ACSI port and should be very fast.

Well, fast for the time, really... :)

Nowadays, unless you want to print specifically from an Atari or on an Atari printer or nostalgia (all good reasons), there are much better alternatives now

Yes, they were very fast for the time. I believe it was because they used the Atari

computers memory instead of just onboard memory. I remember watching a

demonstration by our local dealer back in the 80's. His setup blew away every

other platform he had in the room, trying to print out the same doc., and the

quality was nice.

There are some Diablo drivers which would drive the SLM printers without a dedicated GDOS, then I believe Speedo might work (just speculating), and NVDI will definately drive them.

The SLM printers will work with any ST provided is has enough memory for the drivers and an application to throw something at the printer. ;)

Not related to the topic but worth being mentioned:

I'd consider upgrading the TT's FastRAM. :D
