Tupin #1 Posted October 25, 2011 Okay, so my big chunky ST mouse does not have a roller ball, I don't think it is standard and I have no other mouse that has a ball big enough. So, when I found an ST/Amiga mouse with a switch, (Goldenimage) I thought I was in luck. Well, the mouse doesn't work fully on either type of machine, it can only move up and down, not left to right. Does anyone know where I could get either a replacement ball or how to repair the new mouse I've got?
Christos #2 Posted October 26, 2011 Looks like some cable was cut somewhere or that the switch broke. With alt+arrow keys you can move the cursor and alt+insert is left click, alt+clr is the right. That should be enough if you just want to load the odd game. If you want to run some stuff in gem and you can get your hands on a pc serial mouse there is a driver for that. You connect it to one of the serial ports and you are good to go. Lastly you can get or make a ps2 to atari adapter like the pest or similar. I think the amiga people have one that can be used on an atari st as well.
+DarkLord #3 Posted October 26, 2011 Best Electronics sells a replacement mouse (which is really nice, I've got a couple), but its not cheap at around $35, or a kit that you can rebuild the original mouse with. Its cheaper, around $20, I think. Check their website for more info. http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/accesori.htm HTHs.
Zogging Hell #4 Posted October 26, 2011 Possibly a roll on deodorant ball might fit if your lucky? I also have found with a couple of my mice with that switch that sometimes it does not seem to click in properly. Try wiggling it some more or disassemble the mouse and check what the switch is doing on inside. Also check connections from cable to circuit in mouse they might have come loose and need re-soldering. Finally are you sure its not your keyboard/ joystick connectors playing up? With the old mouse wiggle the rollers where the ball should be and see if (it's working correctly) you can get vertical and horizontal movement.. Tupin #5 Posted October 27, 2011 I did attempt to use it without the ball, and on both Amiga and ST, it only moves up and down.
Chris Union NJ #6 Posted October 27, 2011 I was wondering can a serial mouse be moded to work with a ST or a Amiga mouse? Chris
Zogging Hell #7 Posted October 27, 2011 I did attempt to use it without the ball, and on both Amiga and ST, it only moves up and down. My apologies, I meant the old ST mouse without the ball, if that doesn't work either it'll be the keyboard that's at fault.

Fox-1 / mnx #9 Posted October 28, 2011 I was wondering can a serial mouse be moded to work with a ST or a Amiga mouse? Why would you need a mouse that works with a mouse? If you want to use a serial mouse, plug it in the back, however this excludes usage for things like boot-able games.
+wood_jl #10 Posted October 28, 2011 Well, I'm not sure how committed you are to the ST (just a passing fancy, is it?) or if you grew up with one, love it, and are committed to enjoying the system. I AM. So - as I've posted about previously - the END-ALL-BE-ALL solution to ST mouse problems is to get an adapter to use an OPTICAL mouse. They're not cheap, but they're on Ebay..... eBay Auction -- Item Number: 120784673053 One trouble is that not all USB mice will work with it. This device - while it has a USB port and appears to work with USB mice - **I BELIEVE** actually appeals to the PS/2 character of those mice. I'm talking about a dying breed of PC mouse.....the kind that can function on both a USB port _and_ a round PS/2 port. So, since some mice can do either - and these mice typically ship with a USB-to_PS/2 adapter, I tend to think that this "USB" ST adapter rather attends to the PS/2 functionality of those mice which have a USB connector and will work on either (PS/2 adapter required for "the other.) However, the best mouse I've found that DOES work and is an excellent companion for this - is the Logitech M-BJ58. Don't bother going to stores. Just do an Ebay search for "Logitech M-BJ58" and there are always some of 'em on there. For example, I just bought a spare yesterday, for $5.50 shipped, but would gladly give $10. eBay Auction -- Item Number: 260878281838 In closing, I know everyone wants advice - to the point that they have to take out their wallets - but I'm here to tell you this is the ULTIMATE ST mouse setup. Absolutely so.

Oh yeah, it fits perfectly under the STf/fm/e computers! See this thread..... http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/163201-usb-to-atari-mouse-adapter/ .....which is only about 3 pages long. There are some good pics in there. I took some pics of it next to some coins or something. I used it with Mega STe and it does stick out a bit. However, I just can't stand ball mice slipping. I'll never play Arkanoid again, with a ball mouse!

OldAtarian #15 Posted November 19, 2011 Do you have a Mac ADB mouse? I've never tried it, but the ball in one of those might work if it fits.
