Atari 5200 Complete System In Box. 1986 Time Capsule!

Recommended Posts

Atari 5200 with 2600 adapter, both in boxes, with 14 games, 11 of which are in their original box, all 14 with instructions. This whole system was packed away when my tour of duty on my submarine was over & I was transferred from Charleston, S.C. to SUBASE Pearl Harbor, HI. It has not been opened until now to take pics & do an inventory. & the items are in very good condition. I do remember one of the controllers red buttons quit working after playing alot of JOUST, which required constant pressing to keep the wings flapping. Upon unpacking, I found one of the joysticks to be bent. Unit powers on when plugged in, but I have not hooked it up to actually test things. Games all include Instructions & Overlays in very good to excellent shape, some Overlays have not even been removed from their forms!!

The following games are included:

5200: -Pac-Man In Box with Instructions & Overlays

-Centipede In Box with Instructions & Overlays

-Qix In Box with Instructions & Overlays

-Super Breakout In Box with Instructions & Overlays

-Galaxian In Box with Instructions & Overlays box was somewhat flattened, good now.

-Real Sports Football In Box with Instructions, BOTH Playbooks & Overlays

-Joust In Box with Instructions, do not believe this game had Overlays

-Pole Position In Box with Instructions, do not believe this game had Overlays

2600 -Donkey Kong In Box with Instructions

-Reactor In Box with Instructions

-Spiderman In Box with Instructions

-Raiders of the Lost Ark Instructions, but no Box

-Star Raiders Instructions & Overlay, but no Box

-Sky Skipper Instructions, but no Box

2 Red 2600-type Controllers/Joysticks are included with their manuals.

Wish to sell as a package, if no success, will separate later.

$250 for all of the above.

Also have "Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge" for Amiga if anyone is interested.

No offense, but you are unlikely to get anywhere near what you are asking with the "unit powers on but I didn't check to see if it worked" disclaimer.

I understand, I'll give it a try Saturday when I'm on-duty for 24hours @ the Fire Station. I'll let you know how after that. Any thing specific you would like me to check?

How do I upload pics to my gallery & my profile?

Obviously figured out my profile pic, System pics are over 2MB & will not load.

Then make them smaller.

Try a free image hosting site like imgur.com, that might work for you.

Appears you have a 4 port model and the 2600 adapter may not work with it unless a mod is done

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong I have both 4 and 2 port models and only used the adapter with my 2 port

Yeah, I don't think there's a chance in hell of you getting $250 for all of that. You're new here, so I understand that maybe you saw a few eBay auctions and thought that you could get the same.

The box is beat up, it's got tape all over it.

The joysticks don't work

Also, you said the system is untested.

Try this: test the system and if it works, sell the lot as is for $100-120 plus shipping.

Figured I'd give you a heads-up to save you from trouble later. If you want to keep it, there are people on here who can restore your joysticks to brand new.

I apologize in advance if this sounds blunt, but it's better to hear it from me now rather than someone else who will be....how to say....not as understanding.

As for testing, do the usual: hook everything up, power it on. Try using the joystick that doesn't have the bad fire button first. Test all the games. But, to REALLY test the system, try using:

-Pac-Man to test the precise turning of the joystick

-Super Breakout to test the "analog" capability(how well you can move it back and forth like a paddle controller)

-Centipede and/or Joust to test the fire buttons and speed in which the controller reacts

I would say to use Star Raiders to test the keypad, but I don't see it on the list.

For the 2600 adapter, just hook it up as normal and test games on it. I said $100-120 because even if your controllers are shot to hell, the fact that you have a 4-port system that can use the VCS Adapter is uncommon. The fact that it COMES with it as well, now that's downright amazing! It's worth something in itself.

Personally, if I had the money, I'd buy it at $120. But, in the past month, I got a Turbo Duo, EverDrive, and pretty much ALL my wants from Shout Factory(they had a sale on pretty much all my wants), so I'm broke, lol

But, I wish you luck and I hope this helps!

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, I had been looking for working joysticks, but if someone does repair them i am very interested. I do have Star Raiders ( I had mis-labeled it as Sky Raiders) & will perform the tests as you suggested. I appreciate your being direct, better than beating around the bush & avoids confusion.

The VCS Adapter did not come with the system, I purchased it separately when I came home on leave from the submarine because my younger brothers had a 2600 & we wanted to play their games on the 5200. Receipt for VCS Adapter says November, 1983. System was purchased a little earlier that year.

If the serial number has an asterisk (*) in it then the 2600 adapter will work with it. If not, then it would need to be modded to work with it, if it hasn't been already.

You're welcome, man. I know it didn't come with the system. What I meant was that you're selling the adapter WITH the system. That makes it worth something. As Prodos8 pointed out, if it has an asterisk(*) in the serial number, then the adapter will work. But, since you bought it and obviously used it, I'm pretty certain that it will work with the adapter.

As for repairing the joysticks, there are people on here and other sites that do it. I'm not 100% sure about the joystick itself, but for the buttons and keypad, they can. The 5200's contacts are copper and they are weak and erode over time. What people can do on here, is replace them with gold plated contacts for the best results. Many a broken 5200 controller was saved because of this. The fact that yours are broken are actually quite common. The joysticks were just plain shit and for all of us current and former owners(I'm a former owner), it is the BANE of our existence. But, looking at your 2600 joysticks, there IS a solution. Wico made "Y-Adapters" that you can connect a 2600 joystick to and just use the 5200 controller as a keypad. MUCH BETTER solution by far.

As for your Star Raiders, I don't see the cart in your pics, but looking at the video pad, it's for the 2600. There's one specifically for the 5200 that uses the keypad. I don't think you have that one.

I'm glad that I could be of help!
