+RangerG #1 Posted January 10, 2003 I know that there is a Colecovision game hack of the Super Donkey Kong tape that was available for the Adam. Who made this and where if anywhere could this be found? Also, I read that the game is much better than the regular Colecovision game (with intermissions, better graohics), but that the added level is missing collision control and thus really not finished. Would/could (please) this ever be a homebrew project for a Colecovision programmer i.e. finish this hack and polish it up and thus make the Colecovision have a true top-notch Donkey Kong game. The Colecovision one now is slow, has no intermissions, and it is just sad to know how much better it could have been (especially when Donkey Kong is so linked to the Colecovision). After this project, there is always DK Jr. to improve . Just some though/hopes! I know Eduardo posts on these boards and I think he is a Colecovision expert/programmer. +opcode #2 Posted January 10, 2003 Hi! Very interesting point... I have always though Donkey Kong would be the next logical step in classic gamming after Space Invaders and Pac-Man. But, contrary to the last two games, DK is already widely available for the CV. Ever worst it was the pack-in game! And the conversion quality, while not stellar, is very acceptable, evermore if you take into account some really bad ports like Gyruss or Super Cobra... I don't know, I would like to do it, but I think the interest would be very small... Eduardo
davidbrit2 #3 Posted January 10, 2003 I've always had a soft spot for that conveyor belt level, ever since my Vic-20 Donkey Kong died when I was just a few years old. :-) I say: go for it! The Colecovision version shows promise, but I think it was probably a victim of being rushed to market. I know the Coleco can handle a really smashing version of Donkey Kong. holygrailvideogames.com #4 Posted January 10, 2003 The Super Donkey Kong game does exist. I have it on the emulator that I use with my Dreamcast.
Vic George 2K3 #5 Posted January 10, 2003 One more vote for an enhanced Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr.
MrRetroGamer #6 Posted January 10, 2003 I've seen it on the CV multicart that doesn't exist at Philly Classic. It has the intro and better cut scenes, but the game screens are the same. The conveyor belt screen is there too, but from what I remember collision detection on that screen wasn't working too well.
+RangerG #7 Posted January 11, 2003 There is a great review of the Super DK hack here: http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/sdk.htm This even talks about how the Colecovision DK only uses 1/2 the available space. It would be great to have a complete DK (and faster!!) for the Colecovision. Does anyone else think DK and DK Jr. are just too slow on the Colecovision?
Vic George 2K3 #8 Posted January 11, 2003 I don't think they're too slow, but I don't think they entirely do either game justice, like the lack of those bouncey thingeys on the elevators screen of Donkey Kong and that annoying rope on the second screen of Donkey Kong Junior that is so easy to grab in almost any version but the ColecoVision version, where it ends up being hit or miss. +opcode #9 Posted January 11, 2003 Uhm, looks like a few of you would like to see a new DK and DKJr... Lets see, I am not going to promess anything for now... I believe there is room for improviments, but I am still skeptical about how many CV users would want a new version...
+RangerG #10 Posted January 11, 2003 Opcode -- Thanks for at least considering it!
Ron_Albanese_Again #11 Posted January 12, 2003 I would defintely be interested in a souped-up Dk, DKJ and how about ... DONKEY KONG 3? Wasn't there a catalog number for this or something? Maybe a prototype? Do it! Do it! Ron!
+opcode #12 Posted January 12, 2003 Hi Here is a mock up image for how the first DK would look in the CV. I can assure the screenshot bellow is perfectly feasible in the CV... But squeezing the 256 pixels tall arcade into a 192 pixels tall CV screen was a bit challenging. Nevertheless I think the resulting screen looks indeed nice and preserves most of the original layout.... Eduardo
+RangerG #13 Posted January 13, 2003 WOW! Great work Eduardo! Any way you could also speed Mario up? It is impressive that you can program the Colecovision. Is it harder than the 2600 to work with? Take care, RangerG
MrRetroGamer #14 Posted January 13, 2003 All of the CV work I have seen by Eduardo is SUPER impressive! Can't wait for some of your work to be released!
Draugr #15 Posted January 25, 2003 Count me in as a person who would love to see a DK and DKJ reprogrammed version for the CV. Hell if its done and it looks really well, I'd even be interested in buying the actual cart versions for my real CV. That is if the programmer decided to offer the games in real cart format as well as ROM format. Either way, I'm interested 100% John PS: Anyone ever think of DK3 for CV? One final thought. Has anyone thought of possibly going forth and creating CV versions of classic arcade games that were never released for the system originally? Ex: Tag Team Wrestling, Commando, Millipede, Tac Scan, Empire Strikes Back (The ARcade Game, Not A2600 game). It would be cool if there was a demand for furhter classic game ports to the CV system. I own almost 60 carts or more for my CV and won't stop searching till I have them all. I love Classic Gaming and especially love the CV system and its games. Ron_Albanese_Again #16 Posted January 25, 2003 Yes! I also suggested DK3 earlier in this thread. I'd buy all the Dk remakes in cart form, with boxes, etc. I'm also intrested in seeing games that were announced but never happened -- it kinda satisfys the inner child! And, I'll ask this question again: Wasn't DK3 planned for the CV, and given a cart number? Ron
+opcode #17 Posted January 26, 2003 If I remeber well, DK3 was indeed planned for the CV. But I can't remember if a number was given. The problem with DK3 is that I think it's totally different from the others DKs programwise. So if I was going to port it, I would do it as a standalone game, not a collection package. In other hand, it seems DK and DKJr share a lot of code. Others arcade ports would be indeed nice, and I am working toward this objective. I have already completed SI and SI Part II, and now I am working on Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man. DK ports would be next. I already have a list of favorite arcade games which I could love to port: Gyruss, Moon Patrol, Galaga, Xevious, Pole Position, maybe Commando... Kangaroo... Pengo... Some of these games would need some extra hardware to be done right, like extra RAM. I am studying the possibilities... My ports will eventualy get released in cart form, probably before this years CGE... By the way, about the Mario speed up question, all my ports are based on actual arcade code, so the right speeds are a natual result...
Ron_Albanese_Again #18 Posted January 26, 2003 Okay ... who's droooling (ha ha) ... that makes sense about DK3, and how it doesn't share code ... as the for others, I'd buy them all! Your enthusiasm in appreciated! Ron
chrisbid #19 Posted January 26, 2003 sorry for the dumb question, was Mario Bros ever realeased for the CV? if not, that would also be an excellent candidate for a port.
+opcode #20 Posted January 26, 2003 was Mario Bros ever realeased for the CV? if not, that would also be an excellent candidate for a port. Yep, indeed... So many games, so little time...
