fibrewire #1 Posted December 8, 2011 I was about to list an XL 'lot' on eBay, and I noticed a big difference in weight between two 600XL machines. The heavier one (by about a pound!) is the dark label 600XL, also missing a metal keycap on the select button. Any info about difference in manufacture? Rybags #2 Posted December 8, 2011 The keyboard type can make a big difference. There's something like 5 or more distinct keyboards used among XLs. My current 600XL has the cheaper version of the one with stepped keys, and no metal plate, just brown board. I'd say the ones with the nice solid metal backing plate on the keyboard would be the heavier ones. Not sure what keyboards have the metal plate or not, my 800XL straight keys has one. I think my first 600XL with the better version of stepped keys had one. There's a thread around somewhere that goes into the various keyboard variants. Not sure if the subject of what each weighed ever came into it, but I imagine the higher quality ones would be the heavier ones.
Gunstar #3 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) I have a 600XL with a heavy metal plate on the keyboard, but it's not the step keyboard, it's the flat keyboard. It seems to be a high quality keyboard, though I prefer my 1200XL's stepped keyboard. My 600XL keybaord is made in Tiawan. I was going to take pics, but my camera batteries are dead. flashjazzcat #4 Posted December 8, 2011 I'm just astounded that one 600XL's case is wider than the other.
+orpheuswaking #5 Posted December 8, 2011 Optical illusion?
Gunstar #6 Posted December 8, 2011 Heh, I saw the size difference but didn't look close, I thought the bottom computer was the 1200XL...now I see the bottom of the PBI port...I say optical illusion too!
Gunstar #7 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) They look to be the same width in the first pic showing the topsides. I just double checked and my 600/800/1200XL's are all the same width. Though I only have one of each to compare. Edited December 8, 2011 by Gunstar
flashjazzcat #8 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) I cut the left one out in a bitmap editor and moved it over the one in the right - it seems wider. This corresponds to the second photo of the undersides of the cases. Most surprising. EDIT: I think I know what's happening here. In the second photo, the front edge of the top unit is further away from the lens than the back edge of the bottom unit. This is called perspective lol... Fibrewire said nothing about different sized cases, so I guess I'm just seeing things, and finding reasons to corroborate my visions... R.Cade #9 Posted December 9, 2011 That's not "perspective"- they are right next to each other. Unless that is two photos stitched together, one 600 is much wider than the other.
fibrewire #10 Posted December 9, 2011 FJC is correct with the perspective optical illusion. Funny though, as I too went back for a second look just to make sure I was thinking about not posting a reply in order to drive up sales of this ebay listing, but my moral compass is undefeatable.
