firestorm #4 Posted December 9, 2011 Do not do this its pointless. Its Atari data recorder not Nakamichi 3 head deck
Fox-1 / mnx #5 Posted December 9, 2011 If you have the device laying around, it doesn't hurt to use it but I'd never buy such a thing for this purpose. The head only gets magnetized after miles of tape have passed it. I don't think there's any data recorder around with such a high "mileage".

fibrewire #7 Posted December 10, 2011 wouldn't pressing 'Record" activate the built-in demagnetizer?
Gunstar #8 Posted December 10, 2011 I seem to recall years ago just demagniting with a hand-held magnet and just swiping it near the head or something.
+save2600 #9 Posted December 10, 2011 IF you suspect your tape heads need to be demagnetized, play an audio tape or other tape you're familiar with and listen to how it sounds. If it produces a muffled sound, with very little highs, clean your head first. If that didn't do the trick, then move on to demagnetization. A magnet, that little doodad or even a regular common soldering iron can all act as demagnetizers but you need to perform the sweep just right. A search on the net will explain in detail how to perform this.
