CX78 on Atari 800 / XL / XE

Recommended Posts

Let's face it - If you have a mild case of carpal tunnel, using a CX40 to play a game is A NIGHTMARE, so I use the CX78 Joypad.

Can the 8-bit atari computer take advantage of both buttons on the CX78? How does the computer read 2 buttons and are there any limitations to direction/button combinations?

Both buttons, no. Same deal with the ST mouse.

But there's a project that replaces a resistor in the ST mouse to let the right button work on both.

Fairly certain there's also one for the gamepad.

I'm not a fan of the things - the old style games with pixel-level collision need precision and speed for direction changes, and you only really get that with an old-style joystick.

Years ago I bought many of those joypads but, accustomed to Nintendo d-pad precision, I found them not very good.

So I decided to continue to use various classic joysticks like Atari CX40 or Competition Pro 5000.
