SIO2SD mods?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if instructions/schematics for building your own SIO2SD are anywhere online. I've found instructions for internal IDE mods, which I may just do, but I'd really like to build my own SIO2SD setup so I can just use SD cards instead of always using SIO2PC with a PC there all the time, like I do now. Or, is there any SIO2USB mods that let you just use USB memory sticks in the same way as the SIO2SD's? I just want to get the PC out of the equation without going the old IDE route with hard drive.

SIO2USB

Here you'll find pictures of some SIO2SD (and Sdrive) mods fo inspiration. Unfortunately no instructions!

But if you'll see a mod that you like, we can find the author so perhaps he can help you.

BTW, you could insert a SIO2SD inside the computer (flashjazzcat has done it recently so he could help you too).

External makes more sense to me than internal. Not only do you avoid altering the machine, but you can use the device with any of your Atari's as the mood strikes you. My usual machine is an 800XL, but I'll occasionally pull out others to play with for a change of pace.

cheers,

Those are valid points, but my Atari's are all heavily modded inside already, and the case has been modded for audio and SIO2PC/10502PC com ports already.

I think I'd like the internal type myself. I just want to plug and SD card or USB flash into the computer. The way Iook at it is that I have enough daisy chained external peripherials already, as well as external SIO devices that don't daisy-chain. And that external sio2usb device looks to be another device that can only be at the end of a daisy chain. I want to only leave the PC connection behind most of the time, I still want to have all my peripherials connected as well as SIO2PC, but I also want mass storage without a PC turned on all the time or if I decide to seperate the PC and Atari I can, and still have mass storage without the need for a hard drive on the Atari.

My Sio2PC and 10502PC adapters where originally in an external box, hard-wired to my 1050 with a cord coming out the back, but I moved them into my 1200XL (well in the process of doing it) connected directly to the 1200's SIO port instead of the 1050's. I have to, of course, have a 1050 plugged into the 1200's SIO port still for the 10502PC adapter to work.

I'm in full repair and upgrade mode on two 1200XL's and am trying to pack in as many upgrades at once on both. What's already installed is shown on my signature below. One I'm hoping to sell to supplement my income right now. I'll show pics when I'm all done.

This webpage has all the software and the eagle files for versions 1 & 2 of the hardware. It doesn't have the schematic/board files for the version 3 circuit board mentioned in this post.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've decided with this mod just to buy one of the nice professionally made internal or external devices shown to me instead of building my own from scratch. I just don't have the facilities for this one without having some huge generic perfboard and wires going everywhere. Too many circuit layers to do it that way. I'll just have to wait until I can afford to buy one of the above devices.

This thread is about the SIO2SD, not the SIO2PC/USB. You need to search for the information you want first, if you can't find the information using search you should post in a thread about that device or start another thread, not post in an unrelated thread

My appologies, i'm still quite new at the whole forum thing and not used to the rules and etiquette.
