130XE: Why is first DRAM a 4164 and other 4264? Source for replacement RAM?

Recommended Posts

i have opened up my two broken 130XE's and I noticed that both have Micron 4264's... well, 15 of them, and the first socket is populated in both cases with a 4164 (one is a NEC and the other a TMS).

I believe that these are factory original, so the question is why? Seems more than random.

Also, I have noticed that the DRAM is very expensive and all I can find of ebay are more Microns. What other types of memory can I use? is there a better source where I can get sockets and memory?

What other modules are 100% compatible?

At this point I'd rather get the machines up to factory specs rather than attempt an upgrade. If I put sockets in I can do that later...

It is just random. Really!

I have zillions of these machines and I find all kind of rams in my XE's; different types in ONE xe is really more common than exceptional.

Jameco has then for $.99 but they are pulls - removed from old equipment. They also have 41256s that will work.

I notice a lot of 1200XLs with a different DRAM in the last position, also. It is weird... maybe the QC guys loaded them that way just to mess with us.

The most likely reason is that is failed QC and was repaired at the factory before leaving. This is why my 130XE had the CPU and ANTIC socketed. There was also a sticker on the bottom of the motherboard, showing where two pins had been manually bridged with a solder joint. I know the machine was never serviced because I have been the original owner since 88.
