carmel_andrews #1 Posted December 29, 2011 Following on from heaven's post about the hardware reference guide for the Altirra emulator (which i guess/assume is following on from the original hardware ref. guide that was released alongside the 400/800....was there ever an XL version or perhaps this Altirra ref. guide is the missing XL and XE version) How about a revised De Re Atari but this time covering all the various software based hardware tricks that have been discovered/created since the last printing of the original DE-Re book (since i recall that Atari did a few revisions of the De-Re book, which i am guess were just to correct some errors from the previous version) I mention including all the various software based hardware tricks since, if i recall correctly the original de-re book, focused mainly on using atari's gfx/sound capabilities, as well as explaining how to use CIO/SIO routines etc and since the various and all software based hardware tricks is using Atari's gfx/sound capabilites it would make sense to include them and not only that, all these software tricks would be included in one place (i.e in this new edition of the De- Re Atari book) and in English (rather the trawling through loads of webpages to get the same information) As well as including the information on the various software based hardware tricks (which have emerged since the last printing of the original de-re book), perhaps some text can be included to explain the background to each software trick aimed at various level or programming competence (i.e novice, begginer, intermediate and advanced), as well as the idea/concept behind each software trick again aimed at various levels of programming competence and lastly programming examples (aimed at various programming cometences) in various prog. languages, i.e basic/turbo b., assembler, C etc as well as possible advances on the various software based hardware tricks

Mclaneinc #4 Posted December 29, 2011 Yes, that's a job for you Carmel... Actually its a nice idea but the work involved and the fact that the bods on here are still finding things out about the poor old Atari make it a hapless task at this time.. +Ransom #5 Posted December 29, 2011 I look forward to buying a copy of that from you, Carmel. Will you be offering it loose-leaf only, or will there also be softbound and hardbound editions? Will it be an e-book?
Rybags #6 Posted December 29, 2011 It'll make a nice companion piece to "Computing in the 80's: What REALLY happened"
Mathy #7 Posted December 29, 2011 (edited) Hello Carmel It can be done. A bunch of people, all members of ABBUC IIRC, have worked on "Das Atari Profibuch", a German book with lots of info about the Atari 8 bit computers. It's available in PDF and paper editions. They corrected all the errors they found and added a lot of information. Only problem is, it's written in German, so most people here can't read it. If you want to know what was involved, please ask GoodbyteXL. He's a retired soldier and can spend a lot of his daytime on Atari 8 bit related stuff. He visits AtariAge from time to time. He was the leading person in this project. A yes, before I forget, the last page is numbered "315". Oops, almost forgot. GoodbyteXL also asked both publisher and writers for their permission, and got it. In paper. Mathy Edited December 29, 2011 by Mathy
