MRB2011 #1 Posted December 29, 2011 I'm not sure how feasible this is, but would anyone be interested in either doing a hack or a completely new version of Tempest that is as faithful as possible to the arcade version? The Tempest prototype is lame and I think that the 2600 is capable of a lot better. I think it should definitely use a driving controller. I realize the 2600's limitations, but would this be possible?
_shameless_ #2 Posted December 30, 2011 im trying to add in a new level, but havent had much luck
Inky #3 Posted December 31, 2011 I think in this day and age with all the new programming techniques, Tempest is very doable.
sn8k #4 Posted January 24, 2015 I would pay 100 dollars for a working tempest that has atleast 5 different stages. 4 plus the one already in the prototype. A ramping difficulty and color change corresponding to difficulty
ls650 #5 Posted January 24, 2015 I dunno about $100, but I would certainly be in if the price were reasonable.
sloth-machine #6 Posted January 25, 2015 Turmoil and Beamrider are close enough to Tempest for me.
+Nathan Strum #7 Posted January 25, 2015 Challenge of Nexar is a pretty good substitute too.

I realize the 2600's limitations, but would this be possible? Driving controllers? Sure why not.. What's their resolution? And would it be good enough? The original tempest proto is lame. Looks like panties! Why not use the ARM in Melody? It's the modern-day Arcadia Supercharger, is it not? Turmoil and Beamrider are close enough to Tempest for me. I always thought of Turmoil as a separate tempest level in and of itself.
+iesposta #9 Posted January 25, 2015 I've thrown the idea around in my head of how I would do Tempest. One way is big, chunky, colorful play fields, they have already been mocked up in an old thread if you search. The other way would use a bitmap mode, like the Star Castle Arcade rings but wider, or like Suicide Mission but without skip every other line.
Jinks #10 Posted January 25, 2015 Play nexar its way better than some tempest game.. We need more nexar updates!! It was one of my fav vcs games back in the day. I never heard of tempest till 2006 or so..
BigO #11 Posted January 25, 2015 Driving controllers? Sure why not.. What's their resolution? And would it be good enough? Resolution is fairly low at 16 state changes per revolution.
AtarinDave #12 Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) Psh! Idk what y'all are talking about. You should just play some ET, get your mind off things. Lol I'm kidding. Anyway, I would love a new Tempest game. That would be awesome. Edited January 25, 2015 by AtarinDave
macdlsa #13 Posted January 31, 2015 Yep, I really have to remove some dust from my garage/tavern/gameroom... Anyway, the Tempest-prototype is almost horrible and unplayable...
+iesposta #14 Posted January 31, 2015 (edited) Here is what it could look like. And this was done in batari Basic, not the DPC+ kernel which may or may not be able to improve on this -- or in pure assembly could make it nicer. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/121203-tempest-for-2600another-attempt/?p=1463687 Too bad the original creator was banned, he seemed to be talented. reklen #15 Posted February 1, 2015 They made a decent version of Gyruss on the 2600, so why couldn't they do Tempest, it is pretty much the same game.
+save2600 #16 Posted February 1, 2015 Heck, why limit anyone's programming prowess today? I vote for Tempest 2000 2600. Complete with Melt-o-Vision graphics and a kickass chip tune soundtrack.
Mef #17 Posted February 3, 2015 Isn't drawing lines one of the original DPC additional capabilities?
Keatah #18 Posted February 3, 2015 Too bad the original creator was banned, he seemed to be talented. Why'd that happen? And I hate to say it, but that ban action probably killed the project.
SoulBlazer #19 Posted February 4, 2015 Why'd that happen? And I hate to say it, but that ban action probably killed the project. Let's just say he had a colorful history here and leave it at that.
