What do you think of my History of RPG's article?

Recommended Posts

agreed, Ultima definately should have been mentioned. It did, after all, appear on the nes/gameboy. It was definately a console oriented slant, so by the time the 2600 hit, i tried to stick mostly to consoles. And wasn't moria a 'hack' upgrade?

Ultima has been on a number of consoles though... The NES had a few of them, and so did the SNES and Master System. Heck, even the Gameboy has the Runes Of Virtue games (although those are almost more puzzle games than RPG's)

I'm not 100% sure of the lineage of the Roguelike games, and despite reading through a number of FAQS, I'm still not clear on what was decended from what... Chances are, most of the games were written from scratch, yet derive ideas from previous games. Rogue was definitely the first. I believe Moria, Hack, and Larn decended directly from Rogue... Angband from Moria, and Nethack from Hack. As for games like Dungeon Crawl and ADOM... well, who knows...

you'll see in my original reply that I mentioned the nes and gameboy. I think I own the snes version. Also there were some japanese console versions, iirc. A definite huge oversight on my part, but I knew that would happen when I tried something as board as a 'history of rpgs' thing, especially writing straight out of my head, with no research. But I like that, it gives it a more personal flavor instead of just some researched list.

I always thought Hack came first, but again, that is just my perception. I wonder if mentioned Fatal Labrynth or any of the many console .hack variants....
