I saw this question asked on another forum I frequent and thought I would get the opinion of the members of this board as it seems to have a pretty large and active community.

Basically the question is: Pick your favourite mid to late eighties 8-bit console and your favourite early 90's 16-bit console.

On the other forum people tended to pick the console they grew up with and as it was a forum with mainly UK based members the SMS beat out the NES by a large margin and the MD beat the SNES by a little. I added in the TG and the 7800 (which was 2600 compatible) to make things more interesting.

Neo Geo?

Guess I'll just pick from 'the rest,' then.

As much as I like it the Neo Geo was far from a mainstream console ;)

I would still put it in there, remember the pc engine was only released in Japan, so it was only mainstream if you lived there :)

Erm . . . .

PC Engine was released as the TurboGrafx 16 in the US and got a limited release in Europe as the TurboGrafx, hence why its included as the PC Engine / TurboGrafx in this poll ;)

The Neo Geo sold in small numbers to home users and was never available in any shops that I know of.

This poll is about 8 and 16-bit systems. Neo*Geo was a 24-bit system. 68000 + Z80 = 24-bits. Just ask them. :rolling:

lol!

The tg16 got a super limited run in Europe, I dont know anyone or any shop that ever had it in stock. Import stores probably had them though. Most people in Europe wouldnt have a clue what a turbo is either, apart from if they are into retro....

I would still put the neo in :) My friends cousin had one in the early 90's.

I personally have an official PAL TurboGrafx console. It drops the 16 from the name and is grey instead of black. It also has an RGB socket which is rather nice so you get an incredibly good picture from it. It plays all US games without any problem and of course Jap PCE games with an adapter.

The official distributors of the machine were Telegames UK and it was sold in their shop as well as a number of independent game stores.

did you buy these online? Telegames had lots for sale (they were operating under a dif name) on ebay a few years ago. I bought two :)

At the time, I would have said NES and TG-16. In the mid-to-late 90s, I would have said 2600 and Genesis. These days, I say 2600/7800 and TG-16. That's my final answer. :)

Between the mid 80's and the mid 90's, I wasn't playing much in the way of video games (except arcades), though I still bought everything I could find at the flea market dirt cheap and threw it in boxes at home. Then I started taking it all out around 2000 and later and started playing again. Now, I think they're all my favorites!

Actually, Neo Geo and Genesis could arguably be classed as "32/16" systems - 68000 is like the 386SX, 16-bit on the outside, 32-bit on the inside. (they both have the 68000/Z80 pair)

Since technically the Genesis came out in 1989 doesn't that mean just late eighties? :P

Anyway I voted for Master System & Megadrive / Genesis. Owned both of them back in the day (still have them) and I think they still hold up pretty well today.

8 bit for me is a no brainier. NES is by far my favorite 8 bit system. 16 bit is a little tougher to decide. I like the Genesis, TG16 and the SNES but since I had to choose I went with the console of my childhood, SNES.

Looks like NES and SNES are really dominating the pack.

that is because the snes is basically all in one catagory, genesis is mixed several ways. I think that it's really neck and neck

NES and Genesis for me. All the "great" SNES titles(a majority of them) are rooted in previous 8 bit titles on the NES. I always prefered the original Nintendo games(Mega Man, Zelda, Mario, Castlevania, Metriod, etc) to the SNES 16-bit conversions.

The Genesis on the other hand brought "different" things to the table. But in some ways I feel it was more of a successor or atleast a spiritual successor to the great NES. That's tough to explain. But I can try to give an example. Renegade on the NES you beat up prostitutes and there are "beer" advertisments in the alleys. I feel the SNES was much more kiddy and colorful in its games. Where the Genesis retained that gritty early style, yet I do realize the Genesis had it share of "kiddie" games as well.
