Worst Box Art?

Recommended Posts

So AVGN has been doing a series on bad box art. I thought I'd post the videos here.

Part 1: Pro Wrestling (SMS)

Part 2: Mega Man (NES)

Part 3: Shatterhand (NES)

Part 4: Action Fighter (SMS)

Part 5: Shingen the Ruler (NES)

I'll post some more tomorrow.

Gotta go with Guardian Legend on the NES and the creepy snake face dude

Meanwhile, Japan got this cool picture on their version:

Yeah, I've been checking them out. I knew about "Cock'In" quite a while back. And from the intro, looks like he's covering Dot Gobbler for the C64/Vic20 which I own heh.

Speaking of Phalanx, the AVGN makes a good point. We are still talking about it. It did make the game stand out. So maybe it wasn't the worst choice after all.

Well the thing is we "talk" about the game. but do we play it? :D

If standing out was the way to get sales, then everyone would do it.

It also take talent to make a good odd cover... and Phalanx did it rather right.

Some of the AVGN critiques are a little nitpicky. I actually like the Shatterhand art.

But for my worst art?

It's not up here for being bad art. It's up here for being deceptive art. This game, despite it's warm smile, will consume your soul due to how downright sadistic this thing is.

I suppsoe that the AVGN pick up covers that aren't only bad, but also completely weird and "innapropriate".

I mean, really bad arts are like bad games : the real ones you can't really say anything about, because real bad is empty.

Most of the cover he picked up, like Ghost Lion, Crackout, or Treasure Master, aren't bad, but they are either very out of place, or odd, or just not reflecting the game content. But there is much to say about them.

The snow white one is all kinds of crappy.

Nothing about the cover or title would cause anyone to want to play it. "The 7 Clever Boys"? Really?? They should have just stopped at "Snow White".

Well Homebrews.... I mean, I think part of the thing with homebrews is first that they can't afford to have the backing of a company like Capcom or Sega or Nnitendo to make nice arts.

Plus, I suppose in the case you show, it's SUPPOSED to be cheesy like most of the other games on the MegaCD.

I hope he keeps doing these. I'm probably enjoying them even more than recent Nerd episodes, although the latest episode about "Mortal Kombat Mythologies" is good.

The series is almost over. Any guesses what #25 will be?

It doesn't look like those titles on the first intro screen are not going to be part of the list. (i.e. Dot Gobbler, the Astrology Game, the Bust-A-Moves and Ironsword.)

So it'll be tough to guess #25.
