Atari Stacy Color...

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure how many of you out there have an Atari STacy but I was curious as to (for those of you that know the inards of the STacy very well) how hard it would be to pop a color LCD in it and have a switch for B&W 640X400(I think?) mode... and then the other 2 color modes?

9" color LCD's can be had at a pretty good price and if anyone know how to mod the STacy accordingly to accept the new LCD, that would be awesome!

If it's at all possible I think it would make for a GREAT project!

(and other then the hard work behind the wiring and maybe a solder here and solder there) I don't see why it wouldn't pay off in the end...

With that said, does anyone have and DEAD or broken STacy's?

:) I always did love the real deal over emulation!

I think the problem will be the LCD controller, a friend of mine who is an Atari ST video guru and developed a GENLOCK system for the ST's looked into this for me a while back, it originally was to see if a STacy LCD controller could be transplanted into a sick ST Book who's screen was good, but the LCD controller had passed on....

The STacy/STBook compatibility issue was too great to overcome easily, so then the topic turned to a color STacy.... The LCD controller is only monocrome so I don't think just popping in a color screen will do the trick. It may however be possible to wedge in an LCD panel that has RGB input or even Composite and look into hardwiring it to the ST's video output and go around its LCD controller all together. Hmmmmm......

Of course, it would be cheaper and easier to just buy a used IBM Thinkpad 560 or 600 and put STEEM on it! :-D

Hahaha... yea.. you keep telling me about this STEEM ;-)

Only thing is... that IBM whatever doesn't have MIDI ports....

(Ok, so I GUESS I could really go out and BUY an adaptor and what not)

The Color LCD with composite input sounds like a good idea....

and I guess since the STacy should have something in there to output to composite (unless it already does?)

It's just a general idea/something to do.

I can live with the monochrome... I want it for my MIDI stuff I'm doing..

but I just haven't heard anyone mention about doing or trying this kind of hack.

That, I'm not sure many current 'atari' users have flat-panel LCD's for their ST/TT/Falcon... (however, if they do I sure do wanna see a pic of it in action)

Of course you'd like an ST portable with MIDI ports...how else would you be able to play a rousing game of MIDI-Maze with some friends? :D
