Stunt Cycle for A8?

Was there ever a clone made for the 800/xl/xe?

 

I loved the arcade version as a teen, but don't recall if any port was made.

Didn't Atari make a dedicated console of that game with handlebars back in the 70's before the VCS?

I have a working Stunt Cycle, unboxed. Actually, pretty sure I have every Atari handheld, & console from Touch Me through the Jag+CD. Did not know they were that expensive.

I have an extra stunt cycle dedicated console (unboxed) I would be willing to part with...not for $100 either! If you are interested, shoot me a PM. Also, I believe that someone made a 2600 repro cartridge version of this available a while back (based on a prototype?). You might ask about that one in the marketplace.

Yep, I've seen the 2600 repro, but like the look of the arcade/console better

I'd rather have a game to play on the A8's over the console, but might take you up on that?

As to the looks of the 2600/VCS prototype Stunt Cycle cartridge, they're attempting to leverage that system's strength in color. This is sometimes a fairly good idea (see Asteroids, Battlezone) but the rest of the transfer there is not very good. I'd like a little more truism to the arcade, as well, surely even the 2600/VCS could do a better motorcycle graphic than that.

Hmm, I dunno about that. Maybe the mint, near-mint, and very-fine boxed units can command that kind of price or more, but for your average dusty, somewhat worn thing, maybe with a dried-out label coming off or whatever, in a weathered or markered-up box, you could probably get a Stunt Cycle boxed for $50 or less. I think these units are more scarce than rare, to use coin collector speech. I searched the dominant auction website and did not see one right now.

 

I do have one of these, and yeah it's a fun and different unit, and there's a distinct "cool" factor with the handlebars.

Interesting is the comment made by "eppy2000" on the Atarimania entry, here it is:

This game was one of Antic magazine's infamous moments, towards the end of their run. It shows you how little attention they paid to their competition, unlike their readers! The pipsquirt submitted this game with literally everything unchanged, except for putting his name in place of Schwener's. Antic later printed an apology and asked if anyone knew how to contact Schwener so they could pay him for the program. I always wondered how that turned out, and if there were any legal ramifications for all involved. I also wonder if Lowell is the star programmer he sought out to be or if he continued to have an issue with plagiarism into adulthood. That would be something if he ever decided to run for a political career. This could come back to haunt him.

I see your point. Indeed the nice, boxed ones are going for $100 and up. In fact even one of the boxes was "markered up" as I said. I think I paid like $40 a couple years ago for my average condition unit in a worn box, so I guess I got a good deal. Thanks for the information.
