Dual Pokey L/R stereo standard?

Recommended Posts

Is there a standard that has been set for which Pokey will be the right and left channels? Traditional, IIRC, the left was also the mono, but maybe I have that backwards.

Anyway, most of the time it really doesn't matter; who really cares which musical voice is coming from the left or right, as long as some are on both sides to create stereo.

But I noticed while playing Zybex stereo and Yoomp! that they also use stereo sound effects. With Zybex the rocketmen sounds come from the left side, the side of the screen they are on and enemy sounds come from the right, the side of the screen for them (if the L and R ouputs are set that way). With Yoomp!, the bouncing ball sound follows the ball around the screen from left to right and back, but if I have the speakers set up properly for Zybex, then Yoomp! is opposite. I remember a similiar situation with the Jaguar and the cartridge version of Hoverstrike having the stereo sound effects backwards (corrected on the later CD release). I hate having to swap cords to get the sound right for each specific game!

Who should I be upset at for getting the channels backwards? The Yoomp! guys or the guys who updated Zybex?

Well then, it's the people who upgraded Zybex to stereo that didn't follow the standard and got it wrong. So basically all the stereo I've been listening to on my Atari has been backwards, becuase I based plugging in the L&R channels off of Zybex' example! I checked the stereo outputs on both my 1200XL's and I connected them correctly: mono=L, I was just crossing the outputs at the amplifier. I'll have to label them/

Or exchange the channels by using a switch :-)

Ultimately that's what I'll have to do if I want to play Zybex with correct sound.

'should' be a simple matter of +16/-16 for the Pokey addresses to fix...

What Sloopy said, and, since the stereo version is a patch to start with, I guess it could be re-patched.

Anyway no problem for real coders who code binary. So please provide the binary and I'll patch it.
