Seemingly unnotable games that you really like?

Recommended Posts

I'm talking about all those myriad console and shareware games that seemingly nobody cares to talk about, but you still really like for some reason.

The ones I've specifically been thinking about are the low-rent, unknown freeware games Dumbo's Adventure http://www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f1563.html and Turbo Lode http://eicart.free.fr/turbolode/index.htm I don't know about the rest of you, but there's something about those games that clicks with me. They have this very surreal, mesmerizing quality that I can't really put my finger on.

What are yours?

I don’t know if this qualifies but Rambo for the Sega Master System is really a fantastic and underrated game IMO. It has some of the greatest 8bit music of all time IMHO.

Powder is also a fav of mine; play it all the time on my DS and PSP. It's an enjoyable and free Rogue-like RPG

The first that comes to mind when thinking quality freeware is Armagetron, the most fun I've had with a Tron lightcycle clone. It might be an insult to call it "low rent", as a ton of effort has clearly gone into it, but the game's definitely of a low profile in the grand scheme of things. Seems to have an active and loyal community and deservedly so.

BreakThru! is a simple, unglamorous puzzle game available on a number of different platforms that's surprisingly entertaining and super relaxing. It's not much to look at, I passed it over for years expecting it to be thoroughly boring but took a chance on a $1 Game Boy copy I stumbled upon last year and it's rarely left my GBA since.

Future Tactics: The Uprising, despite its bargain bin exterior, is a really cool turn based stategy game and multiplatform release from a generation ago that seems to have (somehow expectedly) been largely forgotten. I remember the gaming media of the time shrugging the game off with 6s and generally being apathetic but I seriously dug/dig it.

Break 'Em All on DS may be just another Breakout clone destined for the clearance rack but I've had a lot of fun with it. Overall, I'd say I prefer it to Arkanoid DS.

Hate to sound like a broken record but Rambo has some truly catchy tunes, is highly enjoyable and very much underrated. I was playing some Sega Master System games today and was pleasantly surprised by its awesome soundtrack. I've uploaded a few samples from the OST in case anyone is interested. It’s missing the title and boss tracks but the two tracks in the rar file are truly superb. Check out the remixed versions that I've also included.

To get back on subject another free and quirky game is Urban Dead. It's a MMO that's browser based; no software to install. I haven’t played it in years but my recollections of it are positive. You can either play as a Zombie or a Survivor. It's unique to say the least.

I hear a lot of people talk about Bignose the Caveman for NES having graphics and levels that are too repetetive, but I still think the game is awesome and fun to play. It's basically like a shmup in the sense that you do not want to get hit even once and lose your powerups if you intend on beating the game easily. That is because Bignose uses a club that throws projectiles - stones.
