A to Z console games! Add pics if you can!

Recommended Posts

Hey folks!

One at a time, let's take turns going from A to Z with console game titles!

Console covers handhelds, as well. Genesis, NES, PS3, PS2, Xbox 360, PS1, Game Gear, Phillips CdI, Neo Geo, Panasonic 3DO, Jaguar, Lynx, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Odyssey, Microvision, Pong-type consoles etc., ANY system you plugged in at home or on the road! Imports count too, of course.

Pics of gameplay and/or the box/cd sleeve/jewel case/whatever would be cool too.

I'll start:

AFTERBURNER III, Sega CD 1992/93

Never played this game; heard it wasn't that great and didn't get much use out of the CD technology.

BALLZ: THE DIRECTORS CUT, 3DO, 1995

An updated version of the 16-bit "3D" fighter that originally came out on the SNES and Genesis platforms. It's a quirky game that's strangely entertaining, and the graphics and sounds have been heavily upgraded compared to the 16-bit counterparts. Still, not a great fighting game on the whole, but it can be fun.

COLUMNS, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, 1990

While the world of falling block puzzle games would become saturated in the years following the all-encompassing success of Tetris, jewels (hur hurr) like Columns sought to carve their own niche and bring important innovations to the table. Sega's first endeavour in console Columns fought the good fight against Tetris, defining itself with vivid colour, satisfying combos and an air of Grecian sophistication.

HYPERZONE, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, 1991

HAL Labs has offered much more to the world of console gaming than Kirby, having been behind a number of memorable NES titles including Mach Rider, Air Fortress and the Lolo series. HyperZone, an early SNES release, is not so fortunate, coming off as more a lightly engaging (but attractive) mode 7 tech demo than an entertaining rail shooter experience. It really is a shame as the soundtrack, written by Jun Ishikawa of Kirby fame, is catchy, high energy and just begging to be paired with gameplay to do it justice.

KEITH COURAGE IN ALPHA ZONES, TurboGrafx-16, 1989

It may not have been the ideal pack-in title to turn the Western world on to the TurboGrafx (in hindsight, it really, really should have been Bonk's Adventure in its place) but Keith Courage In Alpha Zones is still an enjoyable, if slightly sloppy, action platforming romp. The duality of bubbly overworld/sinister underworld offers a unique pace to the game and there's something refreshing in the switch between these two radically different atmospheres.

MORTAL KOMBAT !!!

But what console port of Mortal Kombat? Those appear to be screenshots from the arcade original!

PHANTOM FIGHTER, Nintendo Entertainment System, 1990

One-on-one fighting games are something of an odd genre on NES and Phantom Fighter happens to be one of the most interesting, featuring an ongoing struggle against a Japanese ghost outbreak. The initially clunky controls take a bit of an adjustment period but combat definitely feels solid. The ever-expanding arsenal of martial arts moves keeps the rewards a-flowin' and a convincingly haunting atmosphere makes this game Halloween appropriate.

Well I figure you can imagine whatever port you grew up playing by showing just arcade screenshots.

It's too late to edit, but If I could, I'd replace em with Genny screenshots.
