Defender 2000 - Released in '95 or '96?

There seems to be some conflicting information on when this game was released. Or at least, conflicting information as far as I can find right now (most gaming sites are blocked since I'm at work). When was Defender 2000 released? I am told some sites (like MobyGames) list it as '96. However, the manual scan in the AtariAge database has a copyright date of 1995. Does anyone know for sure? Perhaps someone who actually bought the game way-back-when can vouch? I'm not necessarily looking for an exact month or day, I'd just like to know what year it was actually released in.

 

*edit: Sites claim that Zoop, NBA Jam T.E., and Attack of the Mutant Penguins were also released in '96 (FFL not withstanding, of course), so if that's true, maybe D2K being released then isn't so far off. The title screen and instructions say '95 though. Perhaps it just wasn't put out to the public until '96.

Based on old USENET posts, it looks like it shipped in February 1996, but probably was finished in late 1995.

yeah, I believe it was delayed a few times because Atari ran out of money.

It was released in very late 1995 right around Christmas (+/- 5 days) I know that for sure. I dont know the exact date though.

I had Defender 2000 pre-ordered from Toad Computers and my reciept confirms the February 13, 1996 ship date. My reciept is dated Wednesday, February 14, 1996. I paid $59.00 + tax.

 

I 'm pretty sure Defender 2000 was the last game released by Atari for the Jag. The next batch of games were the Telegames releases in late 1996.

I know for a fact that I had my first copy before 1995 was over.... and that the bastard manager at the Funcoland in Sterling Virginia with the "Link" hat borrowed and never returned it (thief). At the time I was doing a short lived online magazine (only did three issues) through AOL/email and got several games for review sent to me in the mail. I pestered Atari on the phone in those days.

BTW...funny about all the Virginia connections in this thread. I was living in Kingstowne, Virginia at the time and bought Defender 2000 at Toad Computers, just outside Baltimore, MD...lol
