What is the extension .a8t for?

Recommended Posts

I've got a file I downloaded some time ago labeled 'Trainer' and when I opened it there are a lot of games for the A8 in there, nothing unusual in the game titles to me except the extension, and file size. Aspqt won't recognize the extension .a8t.

They are all very small files, 25-29 bytes.

OK, thanks MrFish. Now I know they are worthless files to me becuase, one, I don't use emulators, and two, I don't use cheats in gaming at all (except to get weapons on GTA games for mass destruction).

So maybe share with those of us that do cheat and use Emulators.

I discourage that type of thing...not encourage it. Anyway, I certainly didn't download this stuff on purpose, it must have been bundled with Atari800Win 4.0 when I first downloaded it.

I don't know, some games that take a long time to advance in with few lives I'll happily use cheats that exist as easter eggs in the game. Too lazy to find and load cheats in emulators.

Emulation is definitely useful for development and/or seeing if something is worth the effort to copy to my Atari. Was also good for playing Atari games on my TV before I went through the effort to modify the video on my XL.

Besides one day our grandkids or great grandkids will finally kill the last working machines passed on to them and working machines/displays will cost a ton to find.

As an example, try finding a DEC MicroPDP11 capable of running UNIX in complete and working order or an S100-bus micro capable of running CP/M. Emulation is the only way most people will ever even know those machines existed soon. To see what happens without emulation, look what's happened to MULTICS. It's a weird footnote in the world prior to UNIX. Kinda undeserved really. It was quite influential in a lot of ways in OS design. Compilers don't even exist capable of compiling the source last I checked.
