Time to start scanning ST Format/ST World/ST User/The ONE ST etc

Yeah, the guy @ OGM has a few recent posts complaining about the recent update to RS that slowed free downloads to a crawl.

I been collecting all of the Atari and Commodore mags from that site for a year and change now. I even got a few that was lost when the site went down a while ago and haven't been reposted.

 

I'll try to upload all the STFormat I have to a faster free host for ya'll. So don't even bother with RS unless your premium.

Look to the top of the page for site navigation (computers > Atari) etc.

Available magazines will have status and (Link: Rapidshare) underneath the picture.

The absolute fastest I know (always <2 minutes for 300mb files) is Putlocker but never uploaded to it so no idea on their restrictions regarding file types because I've only seen uploads for video files. Most of the others have popups riddled with spyware trackers no doubt but freakshare is usually fast (up to 12 mins for 350mb files).

Don't forget about the Internet Archive. Jason Scott has been tossing terabytes of magazines, books, and other scans into IA for permanent storage. There are a ton of magazines here: http://archive.org/details/computermagazines.

 

If you have scans, I urge you to send 'em to Jason. The IA will make sure they are easily accessible to the world and for all time.

1, yes if people who have the mags have the time and equipment and are prepared to scan them nicely this is the best possible option Even if it is just the content and not the adverts this is better than nothing (plus if you just make a note of the adverts on each page you will find no need to scan the same advert more than once anyway).

 

2. archive.org is indeed awesome, I check there fairly often but also they have lots of retro TV to stream/download.

There is some really crappy scans on there that are almost useless. I downloaded some issues of Your Computer magazine and couldn't even read them.

Also, has anyone managed to download the ST mags from the above site yet, its slow as hell for me, I only have a 2 MB broadband connection

 

If anyone has them downloaded could they advise where they are or upload to Atarimania

I am the owner of OldGameMags, the site you are referring to above.

 

All the issues I have of ST Format have had the covers scanned and added to my site. As stated earlier, issues with "Link: Rapidshare" denote those issues I have scanned to date while the others are those issues in my possession still awaiting scanning. To obtain files more quickly from Rapidshare create a free-user account as it speeds up file downloads dramatically.

 

I stated over a year ago in a post on this forum that I was looking at scanning my ST Format issues but there was so little interest shown at the time that I moved on to scanning other content.

 

I have no idea why McAfee would state that a WordPress site with NO advertising/flash etc would be considered a virus threat. Mind you I never liked that p.o.s software. My telco provided it for free but it came off my PC as quickly as it went on.

PS. It sounds like you just tried to get the files during a high use time on Rapidshare as other free users report getting files at several hundred KB/sec so try at different times is my suggestion. As my site/hosting is paid for by myself and I have received no support in the way of donations from anybody I don't feel I am beholding to anyone to change file-hosting providers etc and most others have just as many issues as Rapidshare in my experience.

As you can see on my post #33, I have most ST magazines ready to scan. These I will upload to Atarimania. Of course you could take copies and put them on your Rapidshare account.

 

Its best to ensure these magazines are scanned for the Atari community and are securely stored for the future.

 

PS All the Amiga, C64 and Spectrum magazines are already scanned elsewhere on the internet, they are not too hard to find in torrents

I do scans for Atarimania but can only speak for myself. The stuff I post on Atarimania is 99% stuff that I scan myself. The rest is stuff that other people have scanned and have said to me that I could post it. A lot of stuff that I scan gets downloaded and put on other sites with no acknowledgement or thank you. It is a little annoying but in the end I scan stuff so people can download it and possibly use it, not so I get some kind of credit. So in the end, to me the important thing is that the stuff is accessible to everybody and that maybe someone will enjoy it. The stuff I really like scanning is the rare stuff so everyone can have a copy. Otherwise no one would know they even exist except for maybe a few diehard collectors.

Most C-64, Spectrum and Amstrad magazines have indeed been scanned previously and are available on torrent sites but I think you would agree that the quality of most of those are absolutely crap!! I cannot believe that someone like Mort could release essentially raw scans and think that they are adequate from a quality perspective. My view is if you are going to do something then do it right. That's why I purchased an A3 scanner, scan content @ 300dpi and spend hours processing them.

 

My site hosts my own contributions and those that visitors/members of the site are happy to contribute.

 

I am 100% behind getting magazines preserved in good quality and out there to ensure they aren't lost forever like numerous Doctor Who episodes. However, I don't trawl other sites, ripping off their content without their knowledge and then subsequently re-host that content on my website. And where I do download a file from another site for my personal use if there is a method/means to thank them I happily do so as I believe a simple thank you can make a person who has spent hours scanning/processing a magazine feel like their efforts have been appreciated.

 

With over 1300 magazines in my basement I tend to scan content there appears to be an interest in and there was so little indication of interest on this forum I dropped scanning ST Format as a priority. I don't classify anything Atari as rare in regards to magazines. Try finding Personal Computing Today from Argus Specialist Publications anywhere other than on my website.

Yeah I can atest to that, even scanning the 100 pages of the Computer + Video Games History of Gaming freebie took me a long time because I wanted it to look like a digitally created PDF not ZZAP64's attrocious crooked scans with yellow pages lol

 

Some magazines however were scanned in the days when CD-R was the media available and so to make scans fit there was a lot of JPEG compression going on.

 

However the biggest frustration is when you get a prize cock who won't post his ebay items even though we are talking 10 mags or so and they have the last few mags in a set you need to complete the run and lives 100s of miles away!!!!! I think the phrase I am thinking rhymes with clucking bell lol

KIWI can I ask do you have any of the last 5 issues of Amiga Power or any issues of CD32 Gamer because I am working on making these complete but have a few issues I don't own.

 

Also I am only missing one issue of The ONE Amiga and one or two of The ONE ST

I'll have to have a look in my basement to see if I have any more CD32 Gamer's other than 11 & 12 which are on my site already but I am not confident I have any more of those unfortunately.

 

I do have a few more Amiga Power mags yet to be scanned but from memory a few have fairly rough covers and I have no idea what the issue numbers are.

 

What issues are you missing of One ST? I have one or two of those. Fingers crossed

I am missing issue 36 and 40 of The ONE ST and from memory I am missing issues 61-64 of Amiga power. Also missing the last issue of The ONE Amiga (despite what people think on their websites The ONE Amiga scanned set is incomplete).

 

Also anything between issue 127 and 160 of Computer and Video Games would be great (I think there is still coverage of Amiga and ST in those issues sometimes, certainly Jaguar and Amiga AGA stuff)

I appear to only have issues 38/39 of One for ST and the issues I possess of One Amiga are those already available as crappy scans on torrent sites (13,32,33 & 47)

 

Still wading through boxes trying to find Amiga Power.

 

I think I have a couple of CVG's around issue 140 mark.

I managed to find 142 and 136 of CVG but other than that I think 127-16? is missing so will concentrate on those whilst looking for my missing 1984-1988 issues too. I might have to start selling off my spares on ebay to fund this though looking at completed listing prices. Why can't I just find some sap on a car bootsale stall selling complete sets of CVG or ST Format etc like other people gnnnnn all I get is silly PS1s and pre 1977 technology (AKA old crap) lol

 

I have CVG guide to consoles 1 and 2 (4 is available on the internet) if anyone needs them, so that also just leaves no. 3 which I haven't seen on ebay for years. They should cover the Atari Lynx anyway.

ST Format issue 60 has been scanned/released over at my website. That brings the total number of issues of this magazine I have scanned to date to 18. Plenty more to come ....
